making stencils

I'm a scenic artist painting scenery for theatre. I run a studio in Kent(UK). I am thinking about buying a vinyl cutter in order to make stencils. We frequently have to paint repeated patterns and text and it would seam on the face of it a good way to speed this up. However I know nothing about the practicalities of doing this.

Can any one help with any of the following.
1) I would need a way of translating a jpg file into something that you can cut from. Our artwork arrives in the form of a painted model and supporting photographs. Do vinyl cutters come with software or would I need to buy something in addition. (To complicate matters I only use Macs and have no PC)

2) Would there be a make of cutter to head towards or any to avoid? I guess I'd need one that could handle film up to 100cm wide

Any advise would be very welcome

Stencils can be made from poster board, Ive done it several times useing a 60 degree blade. You will have to tweek it a little. You might be able to use corel draw to change files to vectors and cut. The Graphtec is one that will do the job!
