Inkjet printing information

Please count me in as another newbie to these forums. There is no vinyl sign business in the town I live near so I'm seeing a business opportunity that dovetails nicely with my computer and graphics skills.

I've been doing a fair amount of research and I'm pretty clear on the vinyl plotting and cutting systems, but I can't seem to find very good info when it comes to inkjet printing on vinyl.

As a part-time photographer who sells fine art prints, I own a couple of high end Epson chromatic pigment printers. My understanding is that I can use these to print on certain types of vinyl and can then feed this into the plotter I'm looking at. Said plotter can then read the registration marks on the vinyl and trim it accurately. Because the inkjet printed vinyl is not durable enough I either need to spray or laminate it, especially if it is being used outdoors.

Can anyone point me to some good resources for this? Or particular material and equipment combinations? While I'd like to buy one of the high end printer/plotter combos, the sparse population out here just doesn't justify an expenditure that large.

My apologies for yet another "clueless newb" question here, especially if it has been answered before (I searched and couldn't find anything that worked). If anyone has a computer or camera problem that I can help out with in return, please don't hesitate to ask.
