I Need a Mentor in the Vinyl Sign Business
Posted by: bparks (---.proxy.aol.com)

I have spent the last 20+ years working for the same company and I have reached a point where I want something more. I have found the sign industry to be very appealing to me with many avenues to follow. I have at least felt I should focus on one to start with and that is vinyl. I really need a mentor to help me along and to bounce questions off of. I feel somewhat ackward approaching someone locally because I'm not sure how much information they would be willing to share if they thought I may become a competitor in the future. If there is anyone that would be willing to answer some of my questions and keep me pointed in the right direction I would truly appreciate it. Let me say I am totally green not only to vinyl signs but to operating a business, so I will need someone with patience. Contact me at rgparks64@aol.com and Thank You!!

bparks,

I completely understand the desire to find a mentor and congratulate you on realizing the value of having one... BUT, usually the best mentors are one who have already walked the path you want to walk and are successful at it. If they are successful then, chances are, they are also very busy doing their own thing.

As a suggestion, you might be better off if you considered volunteering YOUR time and help to someone you consider worthy of being a mentor, take time to build a relationship with that individual and contribute some valuable and practical help to their life. Once you have proven yourself, only then would it be right to ask for help.

That being said, first spend some time at this site [www.thesignexpert.com] and do some reading, especially in the "starting a sign business" section. Then, consider joining some other message boards and begin to contribute some of your 20+ years of experience which I'm sure is valuable.

Good Luck!

Hi Tim

Was just wondering if you might share ur experience with a novice (me) about to buy my first Vinyl cutter.

I have seen demos of Graphtec, Jaguar and Summa and I dont know which one to take the plunge with. The Jaguar is way cheaper than the others and includes software. But Im wondering if its a 'get what you pay for' thing with the cutters or if the software is the main rip off?

Can you help? Please.....

Angie

As far as the business side goes, there is an organization called Score.org, which mentors to folks starting or growing or simply needing a question asked. Very nive resource to have. I recommend it to everyone!

I can understand your concern with local companies, but you might be pleasantly surprised too. The internet brings every person very close to the world. Seek out forums like this one and ask away, lots of competent signwriters on this internet thingy!

It's where I have learned a lot of what I do, the tips, the little things.
Try Signs101.com it's a good forum.

Take care and good luck,
Carl T.

Hi vinyltim32

I would like to know more as I am thinking of getting started in this type of business. I want it to be home based and start with a 24/25 inch printer. (extension of my web business) I have a few questions for you but I do not see PM or private messaging on this board.

This is a real business, not a hobby. Approach it like one. Don't hang out in your garage trying to figure out how to make a sign. Go put in 3-5 years working for a high production sign shop.
