Plan to Plan

"When defeat comes, accept it as a signal that your plans are not sound, rebuild those plans, and set sail once more toward your coveted goal."
      --- Napoleon Hill

Planning has always been a chore that I've come to respect more and more as time goes by. In the past, it was a dreaded thing because the return on investment was not seen immediately. There was no instant gratification so there was no desire to complete the task. With age is supposed to come wisdom, so perhaps that is why the reward is more recognizable… if I can wait!

"You can't overestimate the need to plan and prepare. In most of the mistakes I've made, there has been this common theme of inadequate planning beforehand. You really can't over-prepare in business!"
      --- Chris Corrigan

Planning is a process that helps keep personal and business goals in view. It is a tool that can keep a business on track and that can include contingencies for obstacles. Planning makes the path to success a little easier. It smoothes out the rough edges of the journey and provides direction for decisions when forks in the road are encountered.

But planning is not easy. It takes time and requires flexing the brain a little. Time management experts believe that the best time for daily planning is the night before, and the best time for year-long plans is the year before, and for five year planning, is right now. Developing the habit of planning is usually not easy because it goes against our natural resolve of giving our business all of our attention and energy first.

"The general who wins the battle makes many calculations in his temple before the battle is fought. The general who loses makes but few calculations beforehand."
      --- Sun Tzu

We all know the importance of planning. We know how it can increase our chances of success and how, if we follow a plan, we free up time to be more creative and provide better products and services. Planning also frees up more time to plan which begins the whole cycle again. Our problem is not believing that it works, but actually implementing it.

"Life is full of uncertainties. Future investment earnings and interest and inflation rates are not known to anybody. However, I can guarantee you one thing. Those who put an investment program in place will have a lot more money when they come to retire than those who never get around to it."
      --- Noel Whittaker

There is no secret to doing it except to just do it. There are some basics to planning though and if you follow these, it might help you in your planning time.

First, you need to analyze your situation or business. Look for areas that you would like to see improvement. Then, establish goals that you would like to reach. What is it that you would like to accomplish or see happen. Next, establish strategies to reach those goals and put the strategy in writing. And finally, celebrate your successes!

Planning takes time, but try to ease the pain. Commit to only 10 minutes a day of planning at first. Or, 10 minutes per week. Whatever you decide, act now so that you can plan for a successful business and life.

"If you don't have daily objectives, you qualify as a dreamer."
      --- Zig Ziglar

One Times Square Revisions: Signage in the crossroads of the world through the years
By Louis M Brill

If any building was to be dedicated as homage to sign displays, honors could easily point to One Times Square. It stands tall not only in height, but also throughout its 100 plus year history with its influence on iconic advertising, on sign displays, with its vinyl and electronic billboards and its timeless metaphors, all wedded to the building from top (the annual New Year's Eve ball drop) to the bottom (the news zipper wrapped around the building's base).
