Learn to Grow

"I'm a big believer in growth. Life is not about achievement, it's about learning and growth, and developing qualities like compassion, patience, perseverance, love, and joy, and so forth. And so if that is the case, then I think our goals should include something which stretches us."
      --- Jack Canfield

Personal growth is one of those things that most business people tend to reflect on at the beginning of a new year. Along with eating right, exercising more, and being a nicer person, personal growth appears at the top of the list. Of course, setting a goal is one thing; actually carrying it out becomes more of a challenge.

There are several guides to follow that can help with setting and keeping goals, but most of them include five major categories to focus on for improving personal growth. They include Spiritual, Family, Career, Financial, Physical, and Personal Growth.

"My philosophy is that life is all about learning and growing, and that life can be a real adventure of learning, growing, compassion, and joyfulness."
      --- John Mackey

All areas should receive just as much importance as the next. Focusing on improvements in these various categories is what many great business leaders have done and still do. Some goal-setting experts suggest that daily review of the goals in each category helps to keep the eyes upon the important stuff while filtering out those things that hinder improvement.

Others suggest that reviewing goals once a week or twice a month is sufficient. Whatever the choice, the key appears to be on constant review to keep goals fresh in the mind and the subconscious mind.

"Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth."
      --- John F. Kennedy

It is said that true growth comes with stretching the limits and can sometimes involve discomfort and even pain. It is easy to stay with the status quo and to not make any waves. It will be safe and warm, but there will be no growth to speak of.

"Of all the things that can have an effect on your future, I believe personal growth is the greatest. We can talk about sales growth, profit growth, asset growth, but all of this probably will not happen without personal growth."
      --- Jim Rohn

There is a story about a man that was trying to read the newspaper, but his five-year-old son kept bugging him. He found the picture of the world in the paper and tore it into little pieces, gave the pieces to his son and told him to treat it like a puzzle and put it together. The man figured he could now sit back and enjoy the paper, but within just a few minutes his son was back with the world all taped together. He asked his son how he could put it together so quickly. "It was easy," the son said. "On the back of the picture of the world was a picture of a man and I figured that if I got the man right, the world would be right."

The point is that if we focus on personal development, all other areas in our business world will either fall into place or be less taxing.

"Move fast and break things. Unless you are breaking stuff, you are not moving fast enough."
      --- Mark Zuckerberg
