Take the Brake Off!

"I learned to embrace risk, as long as it was well thought out and, in a worst-case scenario, I'd still land on my feet."
      --- Eli Broad

It's a scary world out there, especially if you are running a business. So much depends on your next move, your next decision. What if your next agreement or action causes everything to crumble? What if that project doesn't get completed by the stated deadline? What if that customer doesn't pay the agreed remaining fifty percent?

All kinds of "ifs" are attached to your business decisions, yet we still move forward. The reason is simple, business people are risk takers. If we weren't, we would play it safe and not even venture out on our own. We will remain where it is warm and safe and where the big, bad wolf can't find us.

"I think that only daring speculation can lead us further and not accumulation of facts."
      --- Albert Einstein

It is the fool-hearted that ventures into the unknown without a plan of action or a course to follow. Risk taking by entrepreneurs is not that kind of dumb risk, but knowing the consequences of each move and anticipating a plan of action. It is like a chess match. The smart players are planning the next move even before taking one. They are foreseeing dangers and making preparations for them.

"I've found that luck is quite predictable. If you want more luck, take more chances. Be more active. Show up more often."
      --- Brian Tracy

To put forth the effort of planning is energy zapping. It takes patience and time and more patience, but it is worth every bit of it. Risk taking and planning is like oil and water to some people. It is hard to see how risks are risks when planning is involved. Actually, planning is required for risk taking for the successful business person. It is through planning that the risks are examined and only after acknowledgement of the risks does the smart player move forward.

"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing."
      --- Helen Keller

For some, the hesitancy occurs at the acknowledgement point of the risks involved. It becomes a reason for paralysis which leads to more analyzing and then more paralysis. Eventually, the decision is made not to decide or take action on a project and success is thwarted.

The secret, (and more people are discovering this), is to simply move --- take action! Get going! Brian Tracy, in his book Thinking Big, found that when thousands of successful people were interviewed as to their success, all them stated that the key is to examine the risks and then get moving. Don't examine over and over again. Know your abilities, believe in your confidence, and take action. It is easier to steer a moving vehicle than one with the parking brake on.

Take the brake off and get moving.

"There are risks and costs to a program of action. But they are far less than the long-range risks and costs of comfortable inaction."
      --- John F. Kennedy

Using Pencil Selling to Close More Digital Sign Deals
By Randy Rogers
