Tebow Does Not Make a Team

"Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work."
      --- Vince Lombardi

Being from the south and particularly from Florida, it is hard not to like and follow the career of Tim Tebow. It appears that the Denver Bronco fans like him too. In fact, many are expecting him to lead the team in the next couple of years to a Super Bowl championship. Although typically seen as the leader of a football team, the quarterback is just one of the players being depended on and depending on others on the team to make things happen.

Making things happen is all a team effort. Sure, there are superstars in football, as well as other sports teams, but they are superstars because they are performing well and not because they themselves win games.

"I am a member of a team, and I rely on the team, I defer to it and sacrifice for it, because the team, not the individual, is the ultimate champion."
      --- Mia Hamm

It is a team effort that causes a business to succeed as well. Without everyone working toward a common goal, it is extremely difficult, and in some cases, impossible to obtain success for a company. The team needs leadership to guide the entire organization toward the stated goals and this leadership needs to know that the team that was put together is capable of getting to the desired destination.

"Finding good players is easy. Getting them to play as a team is another story."
      --- Casey Stengel

While playing ping-pong with a nine-year old nephew who was relatively new to the game, I came up with the idea of us just volleying the ball. (It seemed to be a better use of time instead of picking up every ball he tried to slam on my side of the table, but missed). He still wanted to be competitive though and I had to explain to him that he was now part of a two-person team. He needed to hit the ball in a way that I could return it to him and I had to do likewise. In order for us to be successful at volleying the ball (we reached a count of 42 without missing), he needed to help me to help him succeed.

"The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime."
      --- Babe Ruth

The key to a successful business team is: helping one another to be successful. The famous motivational speaker Zig Ziglar once said that in order to succeed, all you have to do is help enough other people succeed. That is so true when it comes to our teams in our businesses. We must train our team members to give up their "rights" and strive to help one another become successful.

"The team with the best players wins."
      --- Jack Welch
