"In general, I don't know when inspiration will pop up."
--- Larry Niven
A good dose of inspiration is usually what is needed when one gets in a funk--- especially in business. We tend to grind, grind, grind without taking (read having) the time to look up and evaluate why we are doing what we are doing. Yes, we have our mission and goals in mind, but sometimes that only keeps us on the tracks. It isn't always enough to motivate us to get the caboose across the finish line.
We need a refresher of the inspiration that originally led us to get into this business in the first place. We can't always depend on others for that inspiration so we need to find ways to create it on our own.
"In life you need either inspiration or desperation."
--- Tony Robbins
Out of necessity, we work hard to make payroll, buy groceries and get ahead. That is one form of inspiration and it does work for a period of time. But true inspiration keeps firing-up our engines for that long haul. It is what keeps our focus on completing quality projects and providing great customer service.
This type of inspiration is the kind that touches deep inside our bellies and hearts and provides steam for our dream. It is that personal Rocky theme constantly playing in our head or a vision of some Olympic triumph that causes the hairs to rise up on our neck.
"If you can't find your inspiration by walking around the block one time, go around two blocks-but never three."
--- Robert Motherwell
Inspiration comes in many forms and it is up to you to discover what form to follow. For some, reading biographies of successful business people provides inspiration. For others reading daily motivational quotes, listening to music, practicing visualization, praying, meeting with mentors, and many more. Find out what it is that you can use for inspiration and go to that place on a frequent basis for recharging your batteries.
"Don't make music for some vast, unseen audience or market or ratings share or even for something as tangible as money. Though it's crucial to make a living, that shouldn't be your inspiration. Do it for yourself."
--- Billy Joel
Getting back to the basics of why you got into the sign industry to begin with can help you to get inspired again. Did you get away from why you started this business? Did outside forces cause you to abandon your true aspirations? If so, take time this month to think about what it is that tickles your fancy. Think about what your inspiration is for being in this business. If you can't find it, go look for it and change things up to match your inspiration.
"Do not quench your inspiration and your imagination; do not become the slave of your model."
--- Vincent Van Gogh
