"Unity is strength... when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved."
--- Mattie Stepanek
The term teamwork was all the rage in the 80's and 90's. Corporations and colleges were touting the importance of it and training employees and students on how to form teams, how to work in teams, and how to hold the team accountable. The concept worked and many businesses have the success they have today because of implementing the team concept.
Teams are still seen as good, but the emphasis seems to be swinging back to individual performance and creativity. While this is good and it does work too, the most successful businesses are incorporating a harmonious mixture and combination of the two philosophies.
"To me, teamwork is the beauty of our sport, where you have five acting as one. You become selfless."
--- Mike Krzyzewski
In the sign industry, both the team and individual performances are embraced as well as encouraged. Obviously, both are needed, but there always has to be balance. Individuals should be encouraged to create and given opportunities to develop their own ideas with knowing that they, the individual as well as the ideas, are part of the team. It is not that both belong to the team, but that they are naturally for the team's success.
For example, if a lineman on a football team performs a crucial block for the running back of the team and the running back scores a touchdown, the lineman's performance, his skills and ideas to make that crucial block, belong to the team. What is his provides for the success of the team.
"Teamwork is so important that it is virtually impossible for you to reach the heights of your capabilities or make the money that you want without becoming very good at it."
--- Brian Tracy
Being a good team member means being willing to allow the credit of your success to be the credit of the team. Individuals should be recognized for their contributions, but still the contributions are for the success of the team as a whole. Learning to see and appreciate individual as well as team contributions and successes is crucial to keeping the dynamics of a good team in place.
"The best teamwork comes from men who are working independently toward one goal in unison."
--- James Cash Penney
This week, practice recognizing team achievement and look for ways to improve the cohesiveness of the team. Your team is a mixture of individuals all pulling for one common goal. Be sure to keep those goals in the forefront for all to see. Remind your team that everyone has a part and each part is important in order for the team to succeed. Make sure that all members know that their part is.
"I'm going to tell you the story about the geese which fly 5,000 miles from Canada to France. They fly in V-formation but the second ones don't fly. They're the subs for the first ones. And then the second ones take over - so it's teamwork."
--- Alex Ferguson
