"Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time."
--- John Lubbock
Many of us in the sign industry are putting out so many fires in a day that there is barely enough energy left in us to drag our bottoms home. We kick and punch and claw and fight for every inch of progress in order to keep the businesses afloat and perhaps to even make a profit. It is enough to make our heads spin, yet we keep on trucking. It would be obscene to suggest taking any time off for the luxury of rest, but is indeed what we must force ourselves to do.
Rest is the one four-letter word that is naturally avoided for the sake of our businesses. We don't believe that rest can actually help us to become more productive so we don't consider it as necessary and it often times may cause us to feel guilty.
"We need quiet time to examine our lives openly and honestly - spending quiet time alone gives your mind an opportunity to renew itself and create order."
--- Susan Taylor
Taking time to rest though has been proven to increase production. Some experts consider rest to the body in the same light as a bodybuilder or weight lifters see rest. In between repetitions of exercising by lifting a weight, the particular muscle being worked is said to become stronger during the resting phase. The muscle or muscle groups are broken down only to be built back stronger than before during the resting period.
When we work for a period of time in complete focused attention or during our putting out the fires phase, our bodies and minds are actually getting stronger when we rest. The hardest part for a lot of business leaders is actually scheduling quality rest periods.
"There are three kinds of men: The one that learns by reading; the few who learn by observation; and the rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves."
--- Will Rogers
We learn the hard way about rest when our systems shut down due to illness or nervous breakdowns. We might read about the importance of rest and recharging our batteries, but we don't really implement a smart rest program until it is too late.
"The time to relax is when you don't have time for it." --- Sydney J. Harris
Of course we don't have to time to rest or add another to-do item to our already full list. However, the smart leaders are taking time for rest. You know when you need rest. You might dig in and keep charging, maybe having another cup of coffee for extra energy, but you know that it is time to take the time to relax. For some people just taking one day every two weeks to get a good solid ten hours of sleep does the trick. Whatever form is used is better than continuing without rest.
"Gardening is how I relax. It's another form of creating and playing with colors."
-- Oscar de la Renta
Take some time this month to rest. Yes, Christmas is around the corner and family is coming and sales are down and... there will always be excuses. Get a year-at-a-glance calendar and carve out time for rest periods. You will see an increase in productivity and clarity and you will be glad you did it.
"Your mind will answer most questions if you learn to relax and wait for the answer."
--- William S. Burroughs
