No More Speed-Dating

"Personal relationships are the fertile soil from which all advancement, all success, all achievement in real life grows."
      --- Ben Stein

Have you ever tried speed-dating? No, I haven't either, but if you've ever been to a local Chamber networking event or most other networking functions, you can get a pretty good idea of what speed-dating feels like. Let me first state that Chamber events and other networking functions have their place in business. It is just not for me --- at least the ones I've been to. People move from person to person handing out business cards and giving their 30-second elevator speech and then move on to the next person. You end up going home with a pocket full of cards, but that is it.

Business cards are okay if you can remember the person that gave their card to you, you are doing better than most at those events. It is not really a networking event, but a card gathering event. There is no real relationship building going on.

"A cardinal principle of Total Quality escapes too many managers: you cannot continuously improve interdependent systems and processes until you progressively perfect interdependent, interpersonal relationships."
      --- Stephen Covey

Business success is built upon relationship success. We cannot have a successful business without working on great relationships. The challenge is in defining "great relationships." Great relationships are not those that are developed for the sake of taking from another person. We can't strive to build a great relationship based on the premise that the other person can help us in our businesses.

Great relationships must be two-way beneficial in order to succeed. They take time and energy to develop, but great relationships last a very long time, producing fruit for both parties involved.

"Money cannot buy peace of mind. It cannot heal ruptured relationships, or build meaning into a life that has none."
      --- Richard M. DeVos

Someone has once said that if you find a job that you love doing, you will never have to work another day in your life. Of course this is true, but it is also true that if you first focus on building long-lasting great relationships, you will never really worry about money again. It is not that you will depend on your relationships for money, but that the development of great relationships naturally opens doors for you to make money. Focusing on the money first prevents you from building great relationships, while building relationships first facilitates the flow of money to you.

"Leaders understand the ultimate power of relationships."
      --- Tom Peters
When one studies successful business leaders throughout history, it is easy to pick up on how they earned their successes. It all starts with great relationships and great relationships begin with building a foundation with someone that you can help. Zig Ziglar once said that you can get anything you want out of life if you just help enough other people get what they want. If first begins with giving of yourself, of listening to the concerns of someone else and offering assistance. You can find relationship candidates everywhere. They don't have to be in your industry. Begin this week looking at your relationships. How can you strengthen them? How can you develop new ones? Perhaps asking for an introduction from someone that knows someone that you want to get to know.

Do it this week. Do it for the other person. Do it for yourself. Do it for your business.

"God is more interested in your future and your relationships than you are."
      --- Billy Graham
