Story Time

"Communication is a skill that you can learn. It's like riding a bicycle or typing. If you're willing to work at it, you can rapidly improve the quality of every part of your life."
      --- Brian Tracy

Napoleon Hill, the great motivator and writer that gave us such great classics as Think and Grow Rich, and The Law of Success, told the story of a party he attended. Hill said that a woman he met for the first time had traveled to Africa. Hill asked her two questions, both about her travels to Africa. Hill said that the woman sat on the couch at the party and talked to Hill for two hours about her travels. He never said a word, except for those two questions.

About a week later, he received a letter from the woman, as did the hostess of the party. The woman said that Hill is the most fascinating person she had ever met and is a great communicator. Remember, he only asked two questions the entire evening and this woman considered him "fascinating," and a "great communicator."

"The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn't said."
      --- Peter Drucker

The obvious reason Hill was so appreciated by this woman is because she had an opportunity to talk about the most important person in her life--- herself. When we allow others to talk, and we really listen, we not only learn a great deal about the other person, but we also create a path for dialogue that most people don't have a chance to experience. This open line of communication makes it easier for us to get our points across as well. When we listen first, we can then be heard.

"I'm a great believer that any tool that enhances communication has profound effects in terms of how people can learn from each other, and how they can achieve the kind of freedoms that they're interested in."
      --- Bill Gates

Of all the great communication devices on the market, nothing beats our own ears in business communication. Whether it is dealing with customers, vendors, or employees, when we listen--- truly listen first, we are using the best communication tools ever created.

Listening first relaxes the other parties in the communication relationship. Barriers are broken down and honesty slips in. Good listeners are trusted communicators.

"Of all of our inventions for mass communication, pictures still speak the most universally understood language."
      --- Walt Disney

After opening the door for true communication to take place, now it is time to deliver the message. Miscommunication can occur because of poor delivery of the message. One of the greatest techniques for communication a clear message is to tell a story. Most people love a good story and using stories to get your message across is both efficient and effective. Keep the story real, on point with your message. Be real in your storytelling and make sure that the story is in line with who you are. Don't try to be someone else and never belittle anyone in your stories.

"In the last analysis, what we are communicates far more eloquently than anything we say or do."
      --- Stephen Covey

If you are not a good listener or good storyteller, make it a point this month to get out of your comfort zone. Ask good questions about subjects you are genuinely interested in with the other person. Then let them talk. When you are trying to get your message across, think of an event in your life that is applicable to the message and weave it into your delivery. You have the makings of being a great communicator; you just have to let it loose.
