Let Time Go

"I like to do weird things in the shower, like drink my coffee, brush my teeth and drink a smoothie. It's good time management."
      --- Michelle Williams

I did it again last week. I ran out of time trying to complete all the tasks that needed to be accomplished. That is not what I did again. I run out of time every week. What I did again was say, "I need more time." I bet I'm not the only one who said that or something similar last week. We all need more time, but unfortunately, we aren't getting it. We are all stuck with the same 24 hours each day, every day.

Probably what I really need is to practice more time management, but that is such an overused phrase that it has lost most of its meaning in translation. I do know that cutting back to just doing the essentials or tackling the most difficult tasks first isn't working. They are essential and most are difficult.

"Boundary setting is really a huge part of time management."
      --- Jim Loehr

One of the difficult parts of time management is determining what we need to focus on at the moment and what tasks can wait. If you are like me, all tasks need to be taken care of and almost all are of the same level of importance. Setting boundaries the night before going in to work is one good technique that has served well for others. It basically means to plan out tasks and take an objective look at what needs to be accomplished and then put off those things that can truly wait---even if it is something that you want to get done.

"I am definitely going to take a course on time management... just as soon as I can work it into my schedule."
      --- Louis E. Boone

Basically, most time management books and courses boil down to learning to put aside the unimportant for the important. And what determines the importance of a task? That depends on your business requirements, but one thing that does not have an impact on the importance of a task is what you or I consider as important. Tasks are arranged by the impact it gives to the success of the business.

"Time is money, especially when you are talking to a lawyer or buying a commercial."
      --- Frank Dane

Looking at time as a commodity gives it a higher priority in business. It is comparable to the employees of the business, the tools in the shop, or the company's vehicles. It should be cared for and nurtured in the same way. It is best to treat time as something you can manage and maintain rather than something that manages you. Keeping up with where your time goes is helpful, but for now, let's just put time where it should be and that is on what needs to be done first. After that, take the pressure off yourself and don't let time rule the day.

"That's not so important to me, that time thing."
      --- Max Cannon
