Honing Organizational Skills

"How do I cope with stress? I clean and organize."
      --- Sandra Lee

Some people work just fine in a chaotic, unorganized environment. These are rare, and often the unorganized business leader eventually either becomes more organized or suffers from lack of reaching his or her full potential for success. It is the organized person that gets things accomplished. It is the organized business that attracts even more business and reaches more and more plateaus of success.

Many of us struggle with finding the perfect time management tool as well as other devices and plans to help us to get more organized and squeeze out more productivity out of our day. It is the smart business person that seeks out ways to improve organizational skills and learn more about managing personal as well as business time.

"Deadlines aren't bad. They help you organize your time. They help you set priorities. They make you get going when you might not feel like it."
      --- Harvey MacKay

Projects that have an end date force us to get more organized. We either produce by a specific deadline, or we don't get paid. It is this forceful time management tool that stirs creativity in us to find the time, manage the time appropriately, and deliver a final, quality product or service. The end date of a project becomes our motivator for improving our organizational skills.

"I'm definitely a messy person... I know where everything is but I just can't organize. I don't make lists and find scripts on the laundry machine, and under my bed, or in the bathroom, kitchen. It's bad, I really need to take control."
      --- Katie Holmes

The first step in getting organized is recognizing the need for better organizational skills. Many of us have the skills in us or we know how to get organized, but haven't found the convenience of time to do so. Once we see the need for organizing (e.g. profits, recognition, growth), we take the necessary steps to begin to get our house in order.

"Humans are humans because we are able to communicate with each other and to organize to do things together that we can't do individually."
      --- Howard Rheingold

Next, announce to your team that better organizational skills can be learned. Begin a three-month organizing process and get everyone on board with the training. Bring in a speaker from Franklin-Covey or some other time management company to speak to your team and offer tips and advice on getting better organized.

"Whether you're a newspaper journalist, a lawyer, a doctor. You have to organize your thoughts."
      --- Frederick Wiseman

Finally, make getting organized a theme that transcends your company. Put up banners with key organizing tips, talk up organizing skills at company meetings, and hand out rewards for organizing successes. Make it a point today to become a better organized person and company.
