Over the years, you can typically find a message about goal-setting in the last newsletter of the year from us. This makes sense because most people set goals or their New Year's Resolutions at the beginning of the year which coincides with our last newsletter of the year. But that is really a disservice we are providing for you because goal setting and putting down on paper specific steps to achieving success in a chosen area in life or business should be an ongoing endeavor. It shouldn't be just a once-a-year exercise, but a daily, weekly, and monthly process.

As with anything that brings a measure of success, goal setting can become an obsession without becoming a destination. There are people who work continuously on setting goals, but never attaining any. The act of goal setting becomes the goal without any real fruit to show for it.
Instead, as most goal setting authors and "experts" tell us, we should set realistic goals and then work everyday toward reaching those goals. Every day our goals should be reviewed and benchmarks set as to how we will obtain our goals.

But setting goals and checking off successful benchmarks toward reaching those goals is actually part of a growing process developing our talents, skills, and abilities as we stretch to achieve our goals and reach new heights. If we can learn the habit of goal setting, it is not so much the actual achievement of reaching those goals that is important, as it is what we learn and how we grow during the journey toward fulfillment of our goals.
The first step in successful goal setting is to make it a habit and then don't sweat the reaching of the end result, but still constantly strive for it.

We may find that the goals we are setting might not be obtainable by the date we've assigned to the goal. If that is the case, resist the urge to amend the goal. There may come a point when you have to do that, but first look at reassessing the steps you are taking toward that goal. It may just be a little alteration is needed in order to achieve success. Take little steps first in the plan before changing your goal.

Every business and every person should set goals. A lot of people will say that they don't need goals or they don't set goals, but that is not true. If we intend on crossing the street, it is our goal to get to the other side before the bus hits us --- a very good goal. On a larger scale, setting goals that take us to a higher plane in business or goals that make us better people are all worthy goals. These should be put in writing and looked at on a daily basis, so that we may gauge how far we've come and how much further we need to go to reach a level of success.
