Leave Me Alone

"It is better to be alone than in bad company."
      --- George Washington

Christmas, the joyous holiday celebrated all over the world, is obviously more than exchanging presents, putting up twinkling lights, and decorating a tree. Christians around the world see it as more than that, but everyone can agree that this traditional, respected day represents peace and showing love to others. It is agreed by many that having others around to celebrate makes the day that much more enjoyable.

But after Christmas, for the remainder of the year, it would be nice to be left alone. I don't mean this in a mean way to those I want to be with, like family and friends. I am mainly thinking about those that rub me the wrong way with their bad attitudes, negative outlook, legalistic thinking, and dogmatic agenda.

"I love to be alone. I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude."
      --- Henry David Thoreau

A business leader should always be on the lookout for strong team members to help toward building a sense of cohesiveness in the company. Like-minded people that fit the culture of the business are needed in order to not only prosper, but in some cases, to survive. Flying solo becomes dangerous when trying to build a business.

It is those "other people" that I would rather keep my distance from. They take on many titles and come from various walks of life, but generally fall under three main categories. The first is the negative folks. I learned from Scott Tinley years ago that we should all strive to avoid people with negative attitudes and television. Both can do serious damage to heart, mind, and soul.

"Every man must do two things alone; he must do his own believing and his own dying."
      --- Martin Luther

The second category we would be wise to avoid is the category of legalistic thinking. It is the kind of thinking that causes some people to stick to "their book" regardless of whether it is right or wrong. It is the type of thinking that is usually attached to whatever the hot topic of the day is. It could be saving the spotted whale, the newly established rights of first-graders, or that it is unfair for someone to work their tail off and make money and not give it to those who refuse to work. The topics vary, but the person with a legalistic view will take up a cause as the truth and only truth known to man.

"I never said, 'I want to be alone.' I only said, 'I want to be left alone.' There is all the difference."
     --- Greta Garbo

The third category is tied to the second and is those people who are out to change everyone else that isn't believing what the main-stream media is broadcasting. These are the people that want to encourage "occupy" this and that and tell others, especially those in the business community, what they should and should not do. We even have a segment in our county that is gaining ground in trying to get county commissioners to force all businesses in our county to provide paid sick leave to every employee. It is not even considered how this will impact business and even cause some to move to another county, or to look at how most businesses in the county are treating employees with exceptional generosity in every category, including sick leave.

"Life could be wonderful if people would leave you alone."
-- Charlie Chaplin wishes you all a very merry Christmas… and a year of being left alone.
