Take Charge of Your Health

"Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity."
     --- John F. Kennedy

In our current state of topsy-turvy healthcare policies and the unknown future of the availability of quality doctors and nursing services, it is wise for us to consider the condition of our own health. No longer is it acceptable for us to use the excuse that we don't have the time to exercise or create healthy meals. We must take the quality of our health very seriously if we want to continue in business, providing for our employees and family, and living with the ones we love.

Scores of businesses are dropping health coverage for employees in lieu of being penalized by the government which hurts thousands, but can also provide a couple of positive benefits the government did not consider. First, employees (most of them) will now begin taking responsibility for their health and begin taking action to improve their condition. Second, emergency rooms and doctor's offices will not be as crowded because people (the responsible ones) will quit going to the doctor for things they can take care of with some good, old-fashioned home remedies their Mamas used.

"Healthy citizens are the greatest asset any country can have."
     --- Winston Churchill

By starting an exercise program and letting everyone at your business know about it provides the incentive to stay with it. It also serves as encouragement for those in your organization to begin doing something too. A lot of companies are understanding that instituting a regular exercise program at work creates a healthier, happier workforce. It also develops a tighter team and improves morale.

"I know a man who gave up smoking, drinking, sex, and rich food. He was healthy right up to the day he killed himself."
     --- Johnny Carson

Just as with starting anything new, it is best to learn as much as you can about exercise and how to do it properly, and to ease into it. Taking small steps toward weekly and monthly goals is a safe way to handle a new conditioning program. Beginning with the goal of running a marathon in a month, and you've never run before, is not a safe way to exercise. If one of your healthy goals is to quit doing something that is unhealthy, don't quit everything at once - you'll be right back where you started before you know it.

"A vigorous five-mile walk will do more good for an unhappy but otherwise healthy adult than all the medicine and psychology in the world."
     --- Paul Dudley White

For those of you who already exercising or have in the past, you know how beneficial it is for both your body and mind. People that exercise typically have more energy and a clearer mind from which to work. Better decisions are made and stress is handled better when you are exercising regularly. Something as simple as walking more and on a more consistent basis can add years to your life and profits to your business. Test it and see.

"Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise."
     --- Benjamin Franklin
