"If you pick the right people and give them the opportunity to spread their wings and put compensation as a carrier behind it, you almost don't have to manage them."
--- Jack Welch
One of the most challenging aspects of operating a business is the management of people. Keeping people happy and content is not always seen as a part of people management, but it is really the responsibility of the business leadership. Managing employees is not a do-it-once-and-it-is-done kind of task. It is an ongoing process that requires constant attention and relentless innovation in order to create and develop a true dream team.
Choosing the right people for the positions you have open is the beginning of the use of good management skills. Thereafter, the management process should prove to be a lot easier after this initial critical step is addressed. Some operations spend a lot of time and energy in winning a large project and need more employees right away. Unfortunately, the actions taken at this point can cause management nightmares. Just throwing warm bodies at a job will prove to be disastrous for both the outcome of the project as well as the business. Taking the time to find ideal candidates is better for all parties involved in the long run.
"There are people who are really good managers, people who can manage a big organization, and then there are people who are very analytic or focused on strategy. Those two types don't usually tend to be in the same person. I would put myself much more in the latter camp."
--- Mark Zuckerberg
If you have the luxury of hiring a manager, make sure that the skills, abilities, knowledge, and talent are in-line with what you desire and what you need for managing your team members. If you are a one-person doing-it-all, remember that you serve as a manager and a leader rolled into one.
"No institution can possibly survive if it needs geniuses or supermen to manage it. It must be organized in such a way as to be able to get along under a leadership composed of average human beings."
--- Peter Drucker
Your managers should be skilled in organizing business activities and orchestrating your team members in such a way as to get the projects completed with the utmost quality and in a timely manner. This doesn't take PhDs and MBAs to make it happen. It just takes people with integrity who understand a little of the psychology behind motivating, inspiring, and rewarding employees. These attributes can be learned and it doesn't always take seasoned, experienced managers to get the job done. A well-coached ambitious manager can often work circles around a manager with a lengthy resume.
"Success depends almost entirely on how effectively you learn to manage the game's two ultimate adversaries: the course and yourself."
--- Jack Nicklaus
Managing employees well, is a difficult task and requires a lot of concentration and hard work. However, it is well-worth the effort in bottom line returns and provides a long-term benefit to the reputation of the business. Managing your team, which includes hiring a qualified manager, as well as managing yourself go hand in hand. Your team is always watching your actions more than listening to your words. Manage yourself in a way that shows restraint, exudes integrity and boundless energy, and reveals work habits that can be imitated. This act alone will set a foundation for meaningful management in your business.
