"Know the true value of time; snatch, seize, and enjoy every moment of it. No idleness, no laziness, no procrastination: never put off till tomorrow what you can do today."
--- Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield
I am not sure if it is an age thing with maturity providing solutions or if it is something I simply fell into, but I would like to think it is maturity and that all the hard work that goes with running a business is finally paying off, but I am beginning to act on things a lot faster than I used to. Procrastination is no longer a force that haunts me in my business transactions and I feel I can really "get-er-done" on a more frequent basis than in the past.
This positive improvement didn't happen overnight and I'm sure I am not the only one who struggled with putting things off for so long. If you are, or were, in this category, please know that there is hope or a light on the horizon.
"I'd be more frightened by not using whatever abilities I'd been given. I'd be more frightened by procrastination and laziness."
--- Denzel Washington
Procrastination is not a pleasant attribute to have when in business. Acting while the iron is hot is something that should be posted on every business meeting room and read aloud during meetings. Thinking things through has its place in some business decisions, but quick action is what makes up successful businesses.
"Become a worry-slapper. Treat frets like mosquitoes. Do you procrastinate when a bloodsucking bug lights on your skin? 'I'll take care of it in a moment.' Of course you don't! You give the critter the slap it deserves. Be equally decisive with anxiety."
--- Max Lucado
One of the thieves in our lives that prevents us from moving forward is worry. It is the killer of all good things. It is the one thing that can paralyze a man or woman in their tracks and prevent them from achieving any kind of success in business or in anything else. I can't remember who once said it, but they said that worry is like a rocking chair. It is fun to do, but doesn't get you anywhere.
Remove the obstacle of worry and begin today to get the things done you've been longing to do. Hospitals are full of people suffering from various degrees of stress with worry topping the list. If you are in the hospital, you cannot be effective in running a sign business.
"I procrastinate so much and I get distracted by anything."
--- Zach Braff
Once the disease of procrastination sets in, it becomes a cancer that leads to a smorgasbord of other negative issues. Become familiar with what procrastination looks and feels like and make it a priority to rid it from your life. Here is a secret that I will share with you: The remedy for procrastination is action. Pretty simply, huh? Take action, any kind of action, and watch procrastination run out the door.
"If you procrastinate when faced with a big difficult problem... break the problem into parts, and handle one part at a time."
--- Robert Collier
When you can focus on a particular issue, your mind begins to think of solutions or ways to address that issue. If it is a large task, project, problem, challenge, etc., break the task into bite-size pieces and address just that one piece. Two things begin to happen: first, you are taking action which wards off that nasty procrastination; and second, you are perfecting one portion of the task that will instantly lead to solving the next portion and so on it goes.
Stop putting off doing what you should be doing. Do it now and watch what happens. The worst is that you approached it from an angle that isn't working. That is good. Now you can find out what works to get the project completed.
