Want Better Communication? Whack Technology

"It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity."
      --- Albert Einstein

I know we've all witnessed the family at a restaurant having dinner and not a word is spoken as every member is completely focused on their smartphone or tablet. It is actually fun to watch as they all in unison put their digital devices down when the food arrives. This is not a complaint because technology has brought so many conveniences to our lives, but it is troubling to think how the upcoming generation will communicate with one another without learning good communication skills.

The conveniences of technology enhances our ability to communicate in business and to get things accomplished more efficiently and effectively. Just like in science fiction movies, technology can be used for both good and evil, or in this case, for both good and bad communication.

"The first rule of any technology used in a business is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency."
      --- Bill Gates

As busy as we all are in running our businesses, I believe that we still desire to have human contact and that face-to-face meeting to get to know that client, supplier, competitor, employee, etc. Digital devices can be used to help us to keep our appointments straight and give us ample time to actually talk with someone else. It doesn't replace good communication, but it facilitates it.

"Technology gives us power, but it does not and cannot tell us how to use that power. Thanks to technology, we can instantly communicate across the world, but it still doesn't help us know what to say."
      --- Jonathan Sacks

Let's do all we can to improve our communication skills. Obviously, that is an important part of business. But just as important is teaching our team members how to communicate effectively. We should be providing opportunities for them to excel by sending them to communication seminars, classes, Toastmasters, negotiating training, and more. We should teach them that technology should be embraced, but used to help coordinate communication and not used as a substitute for it.

"If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time - a tremendous whack."
      --- Winston Churchill
Try this exercise: Put your smartphone, tablet, smartwatch, Google Glass, and any other Jetson's product in your top desk drawer for the day. I know, it hurts already. Okay, try one hour. You might miss some calls, and the latest Starbucks coupon, but it is worth it. Now walk around your office and shop and notice how free you feel. Test drive this out for a while and talk to people you come close to. Strike up a conversation and notice how often the other person checks his or her phone. That's okay. The point is to not lose your communication skills to technology.

"Everybody gets so much information all day long that they lose their common sense."
      --- Gertrude Stein
