"Infuse your life with action. Don't wait for it to happen. Make it happen. Make your own future. Make your own hope. Make your own love. And whatever your beliefs, honor your creator, not by passively waiting for grace to come down from upon high, but by doing what you can to make grace happen...yourself, right now, right down here on Earth."
--- Bradley Whitford
I met with a business leader the other day who told me of his plans for expansion. The plans are great and with his type of business, will extend his business reach and fatten his bottom line. The only problem is that he shared with me these same plans about a year ago. He still may be able to implement his lofty aspirations, but right now they are merely words on paper.
What my friend lacks at the moment is action. He can plan all he wants, make all of the most hairy audacious goals that he can dream up, but without action, they are simply dreams. It is hard to fault the man since we all do the same from time to time. We draw up great plans for doing this or that, but then push the plans aside for another day. Another day comes and we still have not acted on them.
"Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you."
--- Thomas Jefferson
We've all heard that action speaks louder than words, but how many of us really take that adage to heart? Getting from point A to point B requires us to get off of our duffs and move forward. It means getting out of our comfort zone and leaping toward that which may not be clearly known. It can be scary, but as business leaders, we are used to being scared. The government scares us, the economy scares us, some of our employees scare us, and the competition scares us. So what is one more scare?
"When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don't adjust the goals, adjust the action steps."
We've mentioned in this newsletter over and over again how important it is to set worthy goals and to practice this consistently. Goals keep us moving forward by stretching us and our business to benchmarks we desire to reach. Once the goals are set on paper though, it is time to take action. If success in reaching a goal is elusive, changing the goal is not always the answer. Analyzing the approach toward the goal should be the first step, with corrections made toward the action.
"Thinking will not overcome fear but action will."
--- W. Clement Stone
We are all guilty of standing still when we should be moving. Of analyzing the goals when we should be rolling up our sleeves and moving forward. The remedy is to do something. Even if the action ends up taking us in the wrong direction, at least we've discovered what way not to take in the future. Let's decide this week to act more and examine less. Let's put some spunk in our processes and begin daily action habits.
"Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world."
--- Joel A. Barker
