A New Day A-Dawning

"I have always been delighted at the prospect of a new day, a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic waiting somewhere behind the morning."
      --- J. B. Priestley

We all mess up things from time to time. In business, there are minor mistakes and there are really big whoppers that put a hurtin' on us for a long time. Obviously, the key is to learn from those mistakes so that we don't ever make them again. But we all know that in the fast-paced world of business, it is easy to fall prey to yet another snafu that we wish would never have happened.

That is when it is wise to recognize that tomorrow is another day. We have tomorrow to fix what we broke. To mend what we have torn, and to clean up all the messes we have made. Tomorrow is another day for us to regroup, repent, and rethink how we conduct our business.

"We live between the act of awakening and the act of surrender. Each morning, we awaken to the light and the invitation to a new day in the world of time; each night, we surrender to the dark to be taken to play in the world of dreams where time is no more."
      --- John O'Donohue

Looking at our troubles of the day can really drag us down. What we need is to focus on the time we have ahead of us to repair any damage we have done today. Sounds easy enough, but we all know that when we are in the heat of our business problems, it is difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel. We must remind ourselves that we do have time to fix what is broken.

"I'm a suck-it-up-and-move-on kind of person. Every day is a new day, and you'll never be able to find happiness if you don't move on."
      --- Carrie Underwood

I'm beginning to understand that the key to business success is to keep moving. In other words, we must not worry or wallow in our momentary struggles. They suck for sure, but we need to remember that they are a moment and not a monument. We still have time to fix things and make them right.

We can call the customer and apologize. We can retrain the employee or fire them. We can explain to the client that we undercharged by mistake and ask for more money. The mistake can be turned around.

"The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today."
      --- H. Jackson Brown Jr.

When we make a mistake, it's not that we set out that morning to do so. It was a fluke, a mishap, something that should not have happened. Now is the time to re-examine the events and find out why and how it happened. Then going forward we must strive to be perfect in every aspect of our business every day, a struggle for sure, but still worth shooting for.

"Never give up. Today is hard, tomorrow will be worse, but the day after tomorrow will be sunshine."
      --- Jack Ma

When we are in the midst of a struggle or mistake, today is the time to try to fix it. Knowing that we have tomorrow provides comfort, but if we keep all of our successes and failures compartmentalized in the day we have, we will better enjoy the sweet taste of success or find a solution for a mistake today. In other words, don't put off the rejoicing or the hunt for correction of a problem till tomorrow. Do it today while the sweetness of the pleasure or the pain of the mistake is still fresh.

You will better enjoy the fruits of your efforts in the days ahead if you strive for resolution today.

"Do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day."
      --- Jesus Christ
