Bartering is Good Business

"All government, indeed every human benefit and enjoyment, every virtue, and every prudent act, is founded on compromise and barter."
     -Edmund Burke

Bartering isn't a thing of the past. It is not a long lost art. Many people and businesses not only survive, but are hugely successful through the use of bartering. There are bartering associations in almost every state in the US and there is an international group known as the International Reciprocal Trade Association (IRTA). Bartering is big and just because you don't take advantage of it now doesn't mean you can't profit from it in the future.

Instead of using cash in exchange for products or services, you can apply bartering to exchange your wares for what you want and need giving you better management of your cash flow. And it's not just swapping goods and services with businesses near you. You can access thousands of businesses that barter by going to the National Association of Trade Exchanges (NATE), or doing a search for barter businesses.

"The propensity to truck, barter and exchange one thing for another is common to all men, and to be found in no other race of animals."
      -- Adam Smith

Smart business leaders today are always looking for new, innovative ways to propel their businesses toward success, whether it is in new ways to design and install signage to new, faster software for handling the books. As with most improvements today, technological advances have now made it easier than ever to barter with other businesses to exchange goods and to get the word out about your business.

"In primitive society, man produced directly for the satisfaction of his own wants, but with the development of society came differentiation of function; exchange and barter arose, various trades sprang up, and with the necessity of commercial intercourse came the invention of money."
      -- Charles A. Beard

Getting into bartering is easy. Most bartering groups charge a one-time membership fee of up to $500 and then a minimal monthly fee. Some may take 10 to 15 percent commission on transactions, which still makes it worthwhile for most exchanges. Also, you don't have to accept an exchange with a business that doesn't provide what you need. You can accept barter dollars that can be used for future purchases with any business within the group.

"Capitalism invariably boils down to barter between two willing parties, neither of whom uses force to work with the other."
      -- Feisal Abdul Rauf

It is not suggested that you park all your cash in an account and begin bartering. Bartering is simply another tool at your disposal for when you need it. Personally, I look at it as not only a way to find what I need and pay for it in a creative way, but to meet really interesting people and learn about their businesses and share information about mine. Bartering is that extra arrow in your quiver that can help your business excel in an innovative way. While you are exchanging what you produce for what others produce, you are in a sense, marketing your business to people who may need you in the future.

"Incontestably, the great centres of population in the primeval ages were the chalklands, and next to them those of limestone. The chalk first, for it furnished man with flints, and the limestone next when he had learned to barter."
     -- Sabine Baring-Gould

By Dane Clement

Any great print starts with the artwork. The first step a decorator must take when getting into the business of imprinting apparel is figuring out where the artwork will come from and the proper procedures for converting that art into a format that can be used by the chosen output device.
