The importance of teamwork and developing great teams in business cannot be overstated. Thousands of books on business have stressed the benefits of teams, (more so back in the 80s), and for good reason. Creating and nurturing teams and the concept of teamwork in your business increases production and loyalty and reduces turnover and mistakes. Teams can catapult a business toward greater profits due to increased sales and customer retention and can serve to create a lasting bond and work cohesiveness that insulates the company from negativity and slothfulness.
But building teams require a commitment to the effort. You can't just announce a team philosophy and says, "Go get em!" A team must be put in place, given the rules of the game, and then coached on a regular basis. Here are three steps you can use to develop your own winning team.

The first step for building a winning team is to share your team concept. Gather your employees and let them know that you have a game plan and that you want them to be a part of it. Lay down the rules of the game such as what projects will be included, what parts each team members will play, what the end result should be, and so on.

Next, set aside one day per week to meet with your team. Mondays seem to work for many organizations, but you decide. Keep the meetings consistent and have an agenda ready before the meeting. Some discussion topics should include a look at the status of the project, what still needs to be done, and what are the pressing issues that need to be resolved.
Take this time to coach your team members and guide them through the project. Empower them to use their skills, knowledge, and abilities you hired them for and only offer direction where needed. A good coach looks at the larger picture and doesn't micro-manage.

Finally, take the time to celebrate wins-even small wins. Team members work better together when they are encouraged as well as praised as a team. It's okay to point out some star players, but remember to reward the entire team, and do it often.
When these three basic steps are followed consistently the better your team will gel. Over time, the team will begin to understand one another's strengths and weaknesses and be able to either take up the slack or hand off the burden. The team concept works and the rewards pay increasing dividends over the long haul.
