Out of the big three-exercising, eating well, and getting proper rest...it is the last one that most of us fail to accomplish. We may strive to work out regularly, by joining a gym or working out at home before work, and many are striving to eat healthy foods, but most of us put off getting enough rest. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC), 35% of US adults are not getting the recommended seven hours of sleep each night, and more than a third of American adults are not getting enough sleep on a regular basis.
That's an eye-opening stat, since most people already know the importance of getting enough rest on a regular basis. Unfortunately, sometimes our work causes us to get home late and by the time we spend time with family and eat, it is already late and the vicious cycle continues day after day. But you have probably noticed that in those rare times when you can and do get at least eight hours of sleep, the colors look brighter in the morning. The smells of the day are stronger and making decisions becomes easier as creativity seems to increase, all due to a good night's sleep.

Resting isn't just sleeping, it can also be just taking time to be still. Other studies on rest reveal that times of solitude and being still replenishes brain cells in the same way that sleeping does. Also, simply visiting a different place offers rest. Going to a local museum, park, or a new jogging path can serve the body and mind as this change in scenery is equivalent to resting.

Of course, the purpose of rest is to renew, refresh, and relax, but only after working hard. This effort and relaxation effect is healthy for everyone. Simply working hard all the time without a break is damaging to one's health. So is simply resting all the time. The mind and body is designed to be fully engaged, then rest, fully engaged, then rest, and so on. Too much of either is bad for our health.

One way we can look at our work is that we work very hard to reach the reward of rest. Rest of any type like vacationing, sleeping, reading, hiking, or just vegging. Rest is what many of us work toward. Some call it rest and others call it retirement. But even if you choose to work straight through retirement, those "golden" years will look more golden if you incorporated rest into our days throughout the journey.
Carve out more time for rest and note how your days actually become more productive. Take advantage of those moments and work like a dog, then give it a rest.
