Love What You Do?

"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."
      --- Pele

You may have heard it said before that if you love what you do, you'll never have to work another day in your life. That sounds pretty good, but it is really hogwash. Of course, it is a wonderful thing if you are doing work that you love. If you are really happy with your chosen business, both work and life seem a little smoother. But it is still work. With work, and with particularly running a business, comes headaches, frustrations, heartbreaks, and tiredness.

Still, it is a truism that when you love what you are doing, you are more passionate about the work and the people doing the work. Works becomes something you love getting up in the morning to do. Every day at work brings periodic pleasures that are non-existent for people who are unhappy in their jobs. But what if you are unhappy in your business now? What if the spark is gone and the passion left you a long time ago?

"Learn to enjoy every minute of your life. Be happy now. Don't wait for something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future. Think how really precious is the time you have to spend, whether it's at work or with your family. Every minute should be enjoyed and savored."
      --- Earl Nightingale

The first step for getting the oomph back into your work is to determine if it is really the work that you no longer get pleasure from. Some business owners have found that when they feel like the business just isn't fun anymore, it is really something else going on in their lives. They may be unhappy with something more personal such as their health, their business and personal relationships, or even their current financial situation. If the underlying cause can be "fixed" then perhaps the unhappy business owner might come to realize that they really do love the work.

"It's all about quality of life and finding a happy balance between work and friends and family."
      --- Philip Green

Next, roll back the years to when you first started your business. What was it that made you get into this business? This industry? If it was for the money, then no wonder you are unhappy. If it was truly for the love of the work, attempt to tap into that version of you from long ago. See if you can feel what you were feeling then. Now slowly roll the years forward to today and see if you can determine when, how, and what changed. Perhaps you dabbled into other areas that you really didn't want to do. Or maybe you hired a person or people against your better judgement. Really analyze your business history to see if you can spot the change in you.

"Work hard for what you want because it won't come to you without a fight. You have to be strong and courageous and know that you can do anything you put your mind to. If somebody puts you down or criticizes you, just keep on believing in yourself and turn it into something positive."
      --- Leah LaBelle

Finally, take a good hard look at your segment of the industry and the industry as a whole. Has there been changes that have caused you to break away from doing what you love to do? It may have been some regulation, market changes, or employment law changes that have placed pressure on you, causing you to gradually begin to dislike your work.

To recharge your work happiness and generate greater energy toward your work, try a little job analysis. You may be surprised at what you discover.

"Let the beauty of what you love be what you do."
      --- Rumi
