IT IS GOOD TO GIVE THANKS

"One of life's gifts is that each of us, no matter how tired and downtrodden, finds reasons for thankfulness: for the crops carried in from the fields and the grapes from the vineyard."
    --- J Robert Moskin

Can you believe that Thanksgiving, one of the biggest holidays in America, is almost here?

This year will be ending soon and now we all have an opportunity to reflect on our successes and lessons learned from our mistakes.

    Adrian: "It was Thanksgiving."
Rocky: "Yeah, to you, but to me it's Thursday, right?"
--- Rocky, after Adrian's brother has ruined Thanksgiving dinner (1976).

For some people it may just be another day off, but it is still a chance to regroup and think about where one is going in business and in life. Even if it is not a day full of holiday tradition, it can still be used for appreciation of life and all you've received.

"Radical historians now the tell the story of Thanksgiving from the point of view of the turkey."
    --- Mason Cooley

Looking at things in a whole new light is usually the outcome for many people who use this holiday for rest and reflection. It is a great time to put those nagging negative attitudes far away and bring in a fresh batch of good, clean, unadulterated, positive thoughts. Not just the kind you can drill into your head using infomercial tapes. But, the thoughts that come naturally by reflecting on your life.

"It was dramatic to watch [my grandmother] decapitate [a turkey] with an ax the day before Thanksgiving. Nowadays the expense of hiring grandmothers for the ax work would probably qualify all turkeys so honored with "gourmet" status."
    --- Russell Baker

Renewing your mind is not the only thing this particular holiday can be used for. You can also rekindle friendships, relations with family members and give a special "thank you" to your employer or employees.

I read recently that during the Thanksgiving holiday, the various charitable organizations that feed the homeless and less fortunate are swamped with volunteers; they even turn people away. (Note: Please call your area volunteer organizations if you had already planned to do so.) Why not use the time to spend with family and friends?

"No more turkey, but I'd like some more of the bread it ate."
    --- Dennis the Menace

Sometimes the ideas for a different way of approaching a problem are discovered during this time off. Between the bowl of banana pudding and a bowl game, jot down ideas that come to you. Don't think of it as doing business during the holiday but as a relaxing time to let ideas flow. You may be surprised at what problems, that once seemed large, are now easier to manage and/or solve. You will also be thankful…very thankful!

"I awoke this morning with a devout thanksgiving for my friends, the old and the new. Shall I not call God the Beautiful, who daily showeth himself to me in his gifts?"
    --- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Signs From The Spirit World
By Elaine Saunders

Everyone loves an 'Olde Worlde' pub with its oak beams, horse brasses and roaring log fires. Nevertheless, no matter how old the pub itself, the name on the sign outside is probably the most historic thing about the place.
