From Another's Eyes

It is easy to find fault in others, especially when they don't agree with our point of view. Whether it is our partners, employees, customers, or vendors, it is difficult to stop ourselves long enough to try to see the situation from another person's viewpoint, but that is exactly what we need to do. Criticism is the first and easiest thing to do when we don't see eye to eye with someone else.

In order to make the operation run smoothly, everyone should have a clear understanding of the direction the enterprise is heading. That doesn't mean that everyone will agree with the direction or the steps to get there, but that the plan is set and should be followed.

If you have those who are not in agreement, draw their reasons out to discover their thoughts and ideas. Learning the reasons might not change the course, but at least it gives you an opportunity to see from the other person's point of view. This information will help to open communications and to learn something about your organization from a different angle. It also takes some ammunition away that the other person may have used to criticize you or the leadership team.

Learning to see things from another's point of view opens up new perspectives. It gives you a chance to see different angles and to learn that your way is not always the best way. This is why the President of the United States and other leaders in the world depend on advisors. They seek counsel from others in order to get a well-rounded view of the situation or the problem at hand.

Obviously, your opinions do matter and it is important to voice them after careful consideration of your word choice, your timing, and your audience. Everyone has opinions and most are best kept unsaid. However, there are times when your opinion may be the voice of reason and should be shared. But, in most cases, the prudent act is to try to see things from the eyes of others before voicing an opinion that may cause harm.

In his book, How to Win Friends and Influence People, Dale Carnegie said, "Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain - and most fools do." The difficulty comes in holding our tongue. How often we look to find fault in others without considering their circumstances and the troubles they may be having in life. Sure, you may be right and your opinion correctly on the mark, but voicing it without consideration for the other person is just foolish.
