Reinstating Commitment

We are experiencing some tough times. The financial market is in an uproar because of bad business practices by lending institutions and people signing for loans they didn't think they would have to pay back. On top of that are increasing energy prices, an increase in food items such as milk, bread, and cereals; and an increase in taxes for most States.

What do you do with all of this negativity when you are still trying to deal with regulations and competition? When times get tough, the tough get going, is an easy phrase to remember, but harder to apply.

I have no faith in the policy of scattering one's resources, and in my experience I have rarely if ever met a man who achieved preeminence in money making...certainly never one in manufacturing...who was interested in many concerns."

One of the keys to running a successful business is in knowing what to cut lose and what to hold on to. The master of many trades usually ends up in the poor house. Focusing on the right product or service niche that will bring your company profits takes time, but is worth the effort.

Start this week looking at those things that bring you profits and those that don't. If you are trying to provide many things for many customers, it might be time to re-think your strategy. At the same time, look at those things that are draining your budget (and you do have a working budget, right?). Figure out where you can slim down to become a better, leaner, working machine.

If you are not sure about what to focus on, survey your customers and the customers of your competitors in your area. Find out what is needed to provide what these customers want, focus on providing that, and seek other prospects that need the same product or service. Sounds easy, but it takes time and some creativity to really target your niche.

Finally, regardless of what the reality shows, Oprah, the media, or your negative friends and associates tell you, the basic essential values that are the ingredients of every successful enterprise are the same values that are the foundational truths adopted by the forefathers of the USA. They are also the same values instilled in every branch of our military, our public schools (until recently), and our judicial system.

Although some of these values are eroding quickly due to some recent surgeries (backbone removal) of government leaders, you still have the option of doing what is right, regardless of loud voices from small people. Take the initiative to set your own company policies, then stand firm.
