Be a Book Worm

"Learning is not compulsory… neither is survival."
      --- W. Edwards Deming

What is the name of the last book that you read? Some of you are probably thinking, "Are you kidding me? I barely have time for an article, let alone a book!" Understandably, most sign business owners are spending any "loose" time putting out fires or playing catch-up with unfinished projects. As a business owner, the demanding pace can be daunting leaving little time left for any luxuries such as reading.

In his book, Time Power, Brian Tracy gives ideas on how to get more done faster. On the subject of reading, he suggests that reading just 15 minutes a day can allow you to finish any of the great books you've always wanted to read in just a couple of weeks. Depending on how fast you read, you can finish many books every year.

"An expert is a person who avoids small error as he sweeps on to the grand fallacy."
      --- Benjamin Stolberg

Reading on how to run your business more efficiently is just one category of good reading available. It's certain that your local library offers some of the most recent titles available on the best-seller lists. All of them might not appeal to you, but a quick search (most by using the Internet), will help you find out what your library has for your tastes.

Checking out a book from the library or buying one from one of the popular bookstores is a great investment. There is a wealth of information in print that you can apply immediately to your business. Whether it is creating a better sign product, estimating sign jobs, or even branching out, you can find the information in books.

"That which we persist in doing becomes easier, not that the task itself has become easier, but that our ability to perform it has improved."
      --- Ralph Waldo Emerson

You have three more months left in 2007. Why not set a goal to finish at least one good book on the subject of your business --- either the nuts and bolts of your business or the administration side ---- and one book on a subject that you always wanted to understand. Broadening your horizons in this way not only adds spice to your life but helps at parties when you show off your new-found knowledge.

"A cynic is someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing."
      ---- Oscar Wilder

While you're at it, be sure to keep reading the articles in and other trade publications, but include worldly publications such as The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and BusinessWeek to keep current with what is going on with the economy and other industries. These will sometimes spark ideas for your business. You may discover that your part of the country is the next big growth area. You'll be ready to take advantage of this information while your competitors are sleeping.

Stock up on good reading material and place it throughout the office and your home. Don't just leave everything in the bathroom. Additionally, sign up for other informative newsletters that you can read from your desk. You don't have to read every word, but enough to prosper from them.

"Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen."
      --- John Steinbeck
