Be Like Gumby

"Most people give up just when they're about to achieve success. They quit on the one yard line. They give up at the last minute of the game, one foot from a winning touch down."
      --- Ross Perot

Perseverance is not necessarily one of the words we like to have repeated to us when we are in the midst of solving business problems. It is like the tobacco smoking volunteer yelling at a runner, "Keep moving, keep moving!" at the 23 mile mark of a marathon. It is just not as motivating at that moment.

But, if we have some similar mantra we can repeat during the regular course of our day, it somehow works magic when we need it most. It is probably because we've repeated so many positive affirmations that our mind resorts to these in times of trouble.

"Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don't quit."
      --- Conrad Hilton

Repeating, "I think I can, I think I can" is good for telling children bedtime stories, but its like having Copacabana playing in your head all day long --- Yuk! (Apologies to all of you Barry Manilow fans). If it is just background noise, it is not the same as convincing yourself that you can succeed.

Along with affirmations, one of the best ways to succeed is to not stop moving. Even during the thunderstorms, which are plenty, you must keep keepin' on. This is a good exercise for practicing persistence until it becomes a habit.

"The winner is the chef who takes the same ingredients as everyone else and produces the best results."
      --- Edward de Bono

A mentor once told me that we all have the same amount of time each day. It always bugged me when he said that until one day I was complaining about not being able to complete a project on time. "What did you do between one and three?" he asked. I said, "I had meetings all afternoon!" "No," he said, "the other one and three… AM?"

He made his point. Yes, we need balance in our lives. Yes, we should have time off for rest, etc, etc. But, there are times when we must stretch ourselves beyond what we think is reasonable. Perhaps that is the only leg up you need to zoom past your competition.

"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing."
      --- Helen Keller

Success is not just working when others are not working or working harder per hour. Success is finding those things that nobody else is doing and then having the guts to do them.

Take time these next couple of weeks to stretch in different directions. Vision yourself as a modern day Gumby. You do remember Gumby, don't you? He was the flat, stretchy green toy that kids could bend into different shapes and various lengths.

Be courageous and bend in directions that may seem uncomfortable at first. Bend and twist and stretch to new heights. Be Gumby!

"The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing."
      --- Walt Disney
