Zig Ziglar once said that you get anything you want in life if you just help enough other people get what they want. This is a great truth and inspiration, but only works if you even have anything left in your gas tank to help others.
If you are like most business leaders today, when your head finally hits the pillow, you are comatose. Exhaustion takes hold of you because of all that you tried to accomplish throughout the day. There is good exhaustion --- the kind you experience after a productive, well-balanced day. Then there is bad exhaustion. This is the kind that continually wears down your mind and body until the little things in your day become mountains. Your moments become monuments!

In their book, The Power of Full Engagement, Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz offer tips on managing energy. They suggest that instead of focusing on managing time, business leaders should learn to master their energy in order to be more creative and productive. The authors go into detail about various techniques to use including balancing energy expenditure with intermittent energy renewal.
The idea is to push your mental capabilities like you would a bicep muscle when working out. And, as you would for your bicep, take time to rest, recoup, and rebuild. This work/rest cycle seems obvious, but look at how much time and energy you put in your business versus the amount of resting and rebuilding that you do.

While the concept of resting is easier to put in a newsletter than to actually do, we are all responsible for including this valuable "technique" into our lives. We shouldn't look at the business owner putting in 80 hours per week and then some on weekends as a model for our business. Each of us has to know our own limitations and decide how much rest is required to give us the daily strength that we need for our individual lives.

Experiment this week to determine the amount of down time that you could add to your schedule. The weird thing is that with some extra rest and relaxation, you may find that you will actually get more done in your week. Sometimes just one night with a solid ten hours of sleep works for some while others might only require a game of bowling, a good book, or some other distraction to get them recharged.
