Ensure Engagement

"We are at our very best, and we are happiest, when we are fully engaged in work we enjoy on the journey toward the goal we've established for ourselves. It gives meaning to our time off and comfort to our sleep. It makes everything else in life so wonderful, so worthwhile."
      --- Earl Nightingale

Getting people to be just as engaged in the business as you are can be quite a challenge. You want others to fall in love with the business like you did, but it doesn't always happen that way. Imagine if every member of your team cared about the business like you do. If every one of them took pride in their work, did all they could to protect the business, worked like the dickens to find and keep quality customers, and breathed, ate, and slept the business like you do, your business would be on easy street by now.

Unfortunately, the people you hired come from various backgrounds, have different goals than you, and are on a completely different path in life. But that doesn't mean you can't get them to be more engaged in their work and see the big picture for the future as you do. To make this happen, follow these easy-to-apply steps on a regular basis.

"As long as I stay engaged with everybody else, then I'll create more comedy. It's just when I shut off and stay at home... What helps me is just to keep moving."
      --- Ron White

The first step is to become a good story-teller. From the first interview with the employee to the first day of work and then continuing on a regular basis, tell your story. Tell them how you started in the business and why. Share with your team members what keeps you getting up every morning and coming to work. Paint a picture for them about why serving others in your particular niche of the industry is so important.

"Communicators need to figure out how well do they engage people, and they should not talk one word longer than people are engaged."
      --- Andy Stanley

Next, don't just give orders, but provide direction. Allow your employees to work from their experience, their creativity and their style. Guide them on what the ultimate outcome should be, then get out of the way.

"When an employee asks why the company does things a certain way, and you can explain the logical reason, then the employee knows what she's doing is valid."
      --- Harvey Mackay

Third, along with leading by giving direction, show your team members what the company did in the past, what it is doing now, and what you envision it doing in the future. Keeping everything close to your chest doesn't work for long. In fact, it is a recipe for disaster. Trust your team enough to let them see what comes in, what goes out, and what needs to happen to make everyone a success.

"By putting the employee first, the customer effectively comes first by default, and in the end, the shareholder comes first by default as well."
      --- Richard Branson

Finally, celebrate your team. A team member that is recognized for an achievement becomes more engaged in their work. Other team members do as well as they witness others successes and celebrations. You are wholeheartedly engaged in your business and desire to have your team just as excited and engaged. Do these four things, beginning today, and watch it happen.
