"Business is about people. It's about passion. It's about bold ideas, bold small ideas or bold large ideas."
--- Tom Peters
People say it all the time. "Life's too short. You better live it now while you can." Or, as author and motivational speaker, John Maxwell says, "Some people live life like it's a dress rehearsal," meaning they are waiting for something to happen. Some of us, especially as you age, attend more and more funerals and I'm sure most of us look at life in a different way after a funeral-at least for a while.
We make promises to live larger, bolder, with more zeal and zest. Perhaps it is natural to feel that way. The current statistics reveal that none of us will make it out alive, yet some people still sit on the fringe of life, or business, waiting for their ship to come in. Others, those who walk and work boldly, swim out to the boat and drag it in. Seems its always been the bold and brave that make things happen.
"Make bold choices and make mistakes. It's all those things that add up to the person you become."
--- Angelina Jolie
Business boldness requires that we take steps into the unknown or almost unknown. Switching to a new office supply store is not bold. Offering profit sharing to your employees is. So is buying another business, volunteering to speak at an association meeting, upgrading your office to a new technology, investing in an untried marketing program, and spending money on the latest, largest printer.
"I was bold in the pursuit of knowledge, never fearing to follow truth and reason to whatever results they led, and bearding every authority which stood in their way."
--- Thomas Jefferson
I know a man in his mid-60s who just recently enrolled in a class to learn Spanish because about 80% of his customers speak the language. Stretching and growing is how business leaders become great business leaders. The bold ones aren't afraid of new ideas, concepts, technology, or strategies. They embrace millennial, and the whole alphabet of generations who are willing to put their ideas out there to produce a better product or service.
"America was born in outrageous ambition, so bold as to be improbable. The deprived, the oppressed, the powerless from all over the globe came here with little more than the desire to realize themselves."
--- Mario Cuomo
Boldness comes from a sense of hunger. If you are hungry, your decisions to find food may look bold on the outside, but you are just trying to fill a void. In business, there are many voids to be filled. You must be hungry in order to be bold. The hunger can be a burning desire to be better or different, but it must be satisfied. Bold people have an itch and they will search high and low to find the scratch that satisfies.
Being bold is not blindly going for something out of reach. Your business can't take too many costly mistakes. Instead, it is a calculated move, but not one that takes weeks or months. It is having the guts to move on an idea that is both intellectually right and also feels right. It is spotting the move from a distance and then taking the leap. Move boldly.
"Leadership comes in small acts as well as bold strokes."
--- Carly Fiorina
