Mentoring Is Rewarding

Being a manager, supervisor, owner, or boss provides an opportunity to help others grow in their jobs as well as in their lives. In a leadership capacity, you have numerous chances to impart wisdom, offer guidance, provide shortcuts, and show others the way to success. By itself, your status in the company places you in a good place for supporting those coming up and behind you in the business.

But being a mentor is a serious responsibility and should be embraced with the knowledge that you carry the experience, knowledge and skills that others need. If your hiring process has been properly executed, then you have golden players who need your help in winning. What you have to offer took years to hone and can provide others a chance to excel without the many bumps and bruises that you received along the way.

If you really want your shop or business to be a huge success, begin now supercharging your people by serving as a mentor to them. One way you can begin is to expose your team members to the successful people that you know. For example, instead of having lunch with another successful business person, invite someone from the field or a sales rep to join you both.

Give your friend a heads-up about the introduction and then introduce your friend to your team member and get a conversation rolling. Then, leave them alone for a while to make a phone call or pay for the lunch. Let them get to know one another and allow your friend to offer advice where needed. This may be the beginning of a lasting relationship or at least be the jump start that one of your team members needed.

There are people in your company or within your circle of acquaintances that know what success looks like. They've seen you or others achieve success and they know that it is possible. What they may not know is how to get to the point of that kind of success. This is where a mentor can be helpful. The mentor encourages and guides the mentee toward success, providing not only direction, but pointing out where the potholes might be and how to avoid them.

    "Find someone within the company who is on another team but is at a similar level or role as you to be a friend, a sounding board, and a place to go for candid feedback. Find a mentor within the company who resembles the leader you'd like to grow to be."

If you are not in a leadership role or feel that you would like to be mentored too, don't be afraid to ask those around you who you admire. Most people will feel honored that you asked and pleased to help where they can. A mentor can be anyone who can lend an ear and then lend a hand to lead you toward your goals.
