"When you have confidence, you can have a lot of fun. And when you have fun, you can do amazing things."
--- Joe Namath
This week's newsletter begins a three-part series on having fun, enjoying humor and still being productive at work. In fact, the whole concept here is that in order to be more productive, we need to stop being so serious. Adding a little fun and humor into the workplace actually generates greater productivity. It's not the point of goofing off and not getting work accomplished, but accomplishing more because there is some fun time and there is time to make one another laugh.
In Part I, we'll address the subject of fun-creating fun, having fun, and enjoying fun. All too often in business the code for the day is be serious, keep your head down, and plow away at the work. Obviously the work needs be completed, but there are better ways of getting things done than just keeping one's nose to the grindstone.
"While you're going through this process of trying to find the satisfaction in your work, pretend you feel satisfied. Tell yourself you had a good day. Walk through the corridors with a smile rather than a scowl. Your positive energy will radiate. If you act like you're having fun, you'll find you are having fun."
--- Jean Chatzky
It's been said that we spend about a third of our life at work. If that's the case, then we should make it a point to enjoy that time. We have to work. Every time I go through the checkout line in the grocery store, the cashier expects me to pay for everything in my cart. In that case, I have to work.
But let's try to jazz it up a little bit. One good way is to create a contest with the people in the office are against the shop crew in a decorating competition. Whoever decorates the craziest wins. You could assign a theme like cartoonish decorations or Polynesian. Whatever it takes. Set some ground rules about keeping it clean, but then allow your team members to have some fun.
"I realized the more fun I had, the more relaxed I was working, the better I worked."
--- Bill Murray
Another good way to have some fun at work is to start the day with a funny movie or clips of funny movies to get people smiling. When people smile, they relax. In fact, it is a scientific fact. Try to think about something stressful at work while smiling a really honest smile. You can't do it.
"Believe in yourself, not only in swimming, but in life itself. You always have to have fun. You have to have an open mind. If you're not enjoying it, don't do it. Life's too short."
--- Debbie Meyer
Be warned: you will have some who won't feel up to having fun that day. That's okay. Just do it anyway. We all have bad days, but over time your crew will come to appreciate and even look forward to some fun initiatives.
"When you are having fun and creating something you love, it shows in the product. So when a woman is sifting through a rack of clothes, somehow that piece of clothing that you had so much fun designing speaks to her; she responds to it and buys it. I believe you can actually transfer that energy to material things as you're creating them."
--- Tom Ford
Here's the biggest payoff of all: Your customers will see you and your staff in a different light. They will begin to pick up on your fun, (it's contagious!), and enjoy your staff even more. When customer service representatives are having fun and enjoying their work, they are more likely to resolve customer service issues on their own, showing compassion, kindness, and empathy where needed.
Go have some fun today!
