New ODYSSEY™ XP Takes Gerber Cutting Technology to Next Level: Product is Faster, More Powerful, More User-Friendly

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of its legendary Signmaker„µ III lettering machine, Gerber Scientific Products today introduced the industry at large to its next-evolution ODYSSEY plotter -- the ODYSSEY XP -- at the United States Sign Council (USSC) show, Atlantic City Convention Center, Atlantic City, N.J.

There, through December 7, visitors to booth 1019 will view firsthand the latest iteration of Gerber's breakthrough ODYSSEY plotter, launched in 1999 as the worldˇ¦s most versatile high-speed vinyl cutter.

Like the original, ODYSSEY XP is a non-sprocket feed plotter that accommodates unpunched media in a variety of widths -- up to 50 inches, and features the automatic material loading and active tracking technologies of the company's breakthrough GerberDrive material transport system to cut graphics quickly and accurately. XP enhancements include faster throughput, easier material loading and unloading, smoother tracking, and more precise cut results.

In explaining these improvements, Scott Anthony, senior product manager, Gerber Scientific Products, noted, "We've developed completely new electronics and increased internal memory to accelerate processing and data transmission. We've also made a number of improvements for better material flow and guidance. Thus, the XP now feeds processing commands in microseconds; and it reduces static and friction to ensure proper media tracking."

In addition to its reliability, fast setup, higher throughput, and true tracking capabilities, the ODYSSEY XP offers simplified tool/rule settings that reduce operator guesswork by automatically setting the correct cutting speed, acceleration, offset and force control based on the material chosen. Further, the system is designed to work as part of Gerber's Matched

Technology System (MTS™), the industry's only proven start-to-finish digital printing solution. Consequently, it interfaces seamlessly with the new GERBER MAXX 2 wide format digital thermal transfer imaging system, enabling images to pass quickly and reliably from computer to printer to plotter.

"The ODYSSEY XP is the ideal print-to-cut solution for the MAXX 2," said Anthony. "Yet it also stands on its own as a superior system for nearly any vinyl cutting operation. Either way, it's an outstanding product for the serious graphics professional."

The ODYSSEY XP is designed to replace the ODYSSEY effective immediately. The product will begin shipping in December. Gerber Scientific Products Inc. is the world leader in the development and manufacture of computerized sign making and specialty graphics systems, software, materials, and accessories -- among them the revolutionary GERBER EDGE thermal transfer color imaging system.

The company's start-to-finish digital design, printing and production products are carefully integrated via its unique Matched Technology System to provide customers with comprehensive engineered solutions for every color printing and dimensional signage need. Based in South Windsor, Conn., Gerber Scientific Products is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gerber Scientific Inc., the world's leading supplier of high technology systems and solutions that enable mass customization in diverse markets: sign making and specialty graphics, apparel and flexible materials, packaging and commercial printing, and optical lens processing.
