Gerber Introduces Revolutionary GerberGauge™ Foil Measuring System for GERBER EDGE® Owners

LAS VEGAS Users of GERBER EDGE and GerberColor™ thermal transfer foils will now find it easy to determine the amount of foil remaining in a cartridge, thanks to a breakthrough measuring system devised by Gerber Scientific Products.

The new feature, called GerberGauge, was launched at International Sign Expo, April 3-5, 2003, The Mandalay Bay Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas.

As explained by Gary Soltoff, marketing product manager, Gerber Scientific Products, the GerberGauge innovation provides EDGE® owners an easy-to-read “length remaining” imprinted marking along the foil’s edge. The marking is displayed as a whole number in meters and yards and appears every four inches (10 cm) to indicate the balance of GerberColor thermal transfer color foil remaining in the cartridge.

“The extremely thin nature of thermal transfer foils, which consist of a polyester film coated with a pigmented resin, has, until now, made physical measuring or estimating of the balance of foil in the cartridge extremely difficult,” said Soltoff, who noted GerberGauge is initially only available on the company’s new Flood Coat White foil, also introduced at ISA.

“Other colors with GerberGauge are slated for release later in the year,” he stated, adding, “GerberGauge is provided at no additional cost to the customer.

“GerberGauge was developed to add even more value to our industry-leading GerberColor foil product line, and help GERBER EDGE and EDGE 2 customers more effectively manage their EDGE-print production and supplies inventory,” advised Soltoff. “At a glance, EDGE and EDGE 2 users will now know if they have adequate GerberColor foil remaining on the roll to complete the job at hand… or if it’s time to reorder additional product.”

He continued, “The advantages of GerberGauge will be readily apparent to anyone using our new Flood Coat White foil, an extra-heavy white pigmented foil developed for flood coat reverse printed applications on clear films or for first-surface printing onto dark vinyl. This new foil, like its companion foil, Jet Black (GCX-12), provides maximum opacity with just one pass, thereby saving EDGE owners time and materials in the production of highly opaque graphics.”

The GerberGauge feature of Flood Coat White addresses a common and previously unaddressed request from GERBER EDGE equipment owners, according to Soltoff, who acknowledged, “We looked at a variety of ways to meet the market’s need for a measuring system, recognizing that customers wanted it to be better than ‘a rough estimate’ and one that wouldn’t add cost to the product. Gerber’s remarkable new solution hits virtually every requirement the market told us it needed for measuring foils. Best of all, it is easy to use and requires no cumbersome mechanical devices.”

Noting GerberGauge is a patent pending innovation, Soltoff said, “It’s the first of its kind in the business, and we’re very excited to be providing such a unique and practical tool to our customers.

“Flood Coat White is just the first foil to feature GerberGauge,” he concluded. “In months to come, customers can look forward to seeing it applied to a greater range of GerberColor foils.” Gerber Scientific Products Inc. is the world leader in the development and manufacture of computerized sign making and specialty graphics systems, software, materials, and accessories among them the revolutionary GERBER EDGE thermal transfer color imaging system.
