ISA Participates In UL Standards Committee on Electric Signs
Alexandria, VA (May 20, 2003) The International Sign Association (ISA) participated in the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) Standards Technical Panel (STP) 48 for Electric Signs and Sign Components, May 13-16 at the Radisson Hotel O’Hare, in Rosemont, Ill.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the technical aspects of draft proposed new editions for UL 48, the Standard for Electric Signs, and UL 879, the Standard for Electric Sign Components. Muhammad Khan, ISA’s technical services director, attended on behalf of the organization.
“ISA is participating in these committee meetings to ensure that the standards under development are inclusive of, and understandable to, sign manufacturers,” said Khan.
The draft documents contained several provisions that required extensive discussion, and the committee was unable to complete its work in the time allotted. Accordingly, the meeting was called to recess until the second week of July.
“The issues were very complex, and time constraints made it impossible for the STP 48 committee to completely review both documents,” said Khan. “We delegated several working groups to research the issues and prepare proposals for reconsideration in preparation for the July meetings.”
Khan continued, “As these standards near their completion the UL/CSA bi-national standards will be the next documents under development.”
ISA is an 2,200 member organization composed of manufacturers, users, and suppliers of on-premise signs and sign products produced by more than 400,000 employees in all 50 states and 69 countries.
ISA exists to support, promote and improve the $30 billion-a-year sign industry, which sustains the nation’s nearly $3 trillion-a-year retail industry.
