C3 win 'Best Digital Sign of the Year' award for VUTEk® printed building
C3 Imaging Manchester Ltd., has scooped the 'Best digital sign of the year 2002' award for a VUTEk® printed building wrap produced for the Commonwealth Games 2002.
Mike Riley, Managing Director, C3 Imaging Manchester Ltd. comments, 'I am really pleased to have been given this prestigious award. The job was by no means easy, and it was testament to the VUTEk® UltraVu® 5300 and the quality
and expertise of the C3 team that we were able to complete the job on time, and to a high standard.'
Installed on the Piccadilly Plaza building in Manchester, UK, the 18.28m x 70.1m wrap was reportedly the biggest wrap to be installed in the host city. Depicting the British hurdler Ashia Hanson, the wrap was printed in only
seven days and provided the background for BBC Television interviews.
Mike Riley continues, 'The Commonwealth Games job was very high profile, and as a result very stressful. We were under no illusion as to the importance of the job and the significant embarrassment if we missed the deadline -
which was extremely tight.
'The printing of the graphics went very smoothly, and as always, the VUTEk®
UltraVu® 5300 didn't miss a beat. But because of the buildings protrusions, the job was quite complicated, with each balcony and window requiring additional panels and banners to be printed.'
In addition to complicated printing, the installation of the graphic also caused some stress. According to C3, as the Piccadilly building also houses a busy bus station, there were serious safety issues to consider. Due to a
high level of pedestrian traffic below the wrap (six floors above), additional safety measures were taken to insure against accidents.
Since the Commonwealth Games work, C3 Imaging has undertaken many other high profile jobs, including a building wrap promoting the Robbie Williams album, Escapology - also installed on the Piccadilly Plaza building. Printed on
the UltraVu® 5300, the wrap, measuring 70m x 20m, took five days to print and proved a very effective marketing and promotional tool.
Mike Riley concludes, 'We were up against some fairly serious competition for this award, and are delighted to walk away with the ultimate title. With an excellent mix of staff and equipment, we hope that the British Sign and
Graphics Association award will be the first of many more for C3 Imaging in the future.'
