„Banana Sprayer“ Thomas Baumgärtel at the viscom 2003

Düsseldorf. Just little more than two weeks and the viscom 2003, the international trade show for visual promotion technologies and signmaking will open its gates in Düsseldorf. 287 exhibitors from 28 countries (2001: 279 exhibitors from 19 nations) bindingly booked their exhibition space.

For the complementing congress, the organizer has won a truly special speaker: Thomas Baumgärtel, better known as the „Banana Sprayer“. Since 1986, the artist has been spraying his works on what are for him the world’s interesting places of art from New York to Moscow and Zurich. The spraying banana is everything for him: „On it you can as in arts illustrate everything. With its liveliness and ephemerality it represents life, art, and the emotional better and straighter than anything else. The emotional life of the Germans resembles rather a crooked banana than it follows a straight, causal logic as we are fooled into belief by the scientists. Our life is banana and art!“

In 1998, he applied a 14 metres long and four metres high banana sculpture to the main entrance of the Cologne Cathedral. This sculpture will be laid in front of the hall entrance for the viscom 2003 feature photo on September 3rd, 2003, at 11 o’clock. Since 2000, Thomas Baumgärtel has been working on the realisation of his „Project for Berlin“ at Brandenburger Tor in which the banana once again is to play a decisive role. More information on this interesting new challenge will be provided in his lecture held at the occasion of the congress taking place on Thursday, September 4th, 2003 at 10.45 o’clock.

The viscom 2003 takes place from September 4th to 6th, 2003.
