FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Luminore, Inc., Winner of the 2001 SEQUOIA AWARD

LuminOre, Incorporated, a San Diego based manufacturer, showcased the Sequoia Award Winning patented cold sprayable composite metal at the AWFS Woodworking Machinery & Furniture Supply Fair Instituted in 1995, the Sequoia Award honors those organizations within the industry that demonstrate environmental innovation and leadership in conservation techniques, applications and processes.

The Sequoia Awards recognize AWFSâ Fair exhibitors with products and techniques that promote a healthy environment cleaner air, water or conservation of natural resources. Criteria for judging Sequoia Awards winners include greater utilization of raw materials; conservation of raw materials through harvesting techniques; creation and use of recycled products; reduction in environmental waste; reduction or air and water pollutants and environmentally friendly manufacturing techniques.

The distinguished panel of judges were selected by AWFSâ for their understanding of environmental issues and their knowledge of the woodworking and furnishings supply industry. The environmental experts who judged the Sequoia Award entries were: (alphabetically by last name)

  • Ann Heil, Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts
  • Larry Kolczak, Community Relations Manager, Air Quality Management District (AQMD)
  • Robert Ludwig, California Department of Toxic Substances Control
  • Eileen Sheehan, Pollution Prevention Coordinator, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
  • Dr. Katy Wolf, Executive Director, Institute for Research and Technical Assistance (IRTA)

As seen in the following detail, LuminOre products and metalizing techniques promote a healthier environment, cleaner air, water and conservation of natural resources.

LuminOre Composite Metals were developed as a cost effective and environmentally sound alternative to solid cast foundry pieces and forgings as well as an alternative to metallic paints, coatings, and finishes. The LuminOre metalizing process reduces VOC’s, disposable liquid waste, consumption of natural resources and consumption of energy.

LuminOre materials are true composite metals. In their raw state the materials are packaged as granular metal powder and a liquid resin binder. When mixed and combined with a catalyst, LuminOre Materials can be applied as a coating with standard HVLP spray equipment, a brush, or a roller to almost any substrate. The material may also be poured into a mold and solid cast. LuminOre Composite Metals are available in nine metals: Aluminum, Brass, Bronze, Copper, Iron, Nickel Silver, Stainless Steel, X-metal, and Z3. When LuminOre materials are mixed and applied they are cold, not molten. The process allows for a cold alloying which will allow the mixing of the various metals to create virtually countless metal color variations.

When compared with the environmental issues of foundries, platings, coatings or other paint materials, LuminOre Materials are an amazing alternative. With LuminOre materials, vapor exposure to the environment and to the applicator is limited. LuminOre Composite Metals contain 42 ½ grams Volatile Organic Compounds/Liter and effectively sprays on in a one-coat application. Comparatively, average water based coatings can contain over 240 grams VOC/Liter and require multiple coat applications. LuminOre Composite Metal is more than 75% metal by weight, so in a liquid state the amount of vapor is limited because the material is 95% solid.

LuminOre is a cold alloy process and therefore, produces no burn pollution. Foundries burn resources (literally). Tremendous heat must be generated to keep metal in a molten state and whether that heat is generated using coal, oil, gas or other combustibles, those resources go up in flames. Additionally, the pollution generated from the burn is tremendous, as well as the outgasing of pollutants from the molten metals.

When properly applied, LuminOre materials will not delaminate, crack, chip, or peel. LuminOre materials have been subjected to 30 years equivalent corrosion and weatherization testing demonstrating zero breakdown of materials. LuminOre materials also show zero breakdown under UV light.

LuminOre materials leach at a rate of only 1,020 parts per billion. This is considered an insignificant leach rate, allowing LuminOre Composite Metals to receive approval for potable water usage from the Los Angeles Metropolitan Water District. LuminOre materials provide “foulant repelling” and “pest repelling” properties. Traditional anti-foulants, such as copper, work by sloughing miniscule particles of material.

LuminOre deters the marine growth without sloughing or poisoning. We have had a test skiff coated with LuminOre Copper in the ocean for over 3 ½ years and there is no evidence of marine growth. Additionally, the planters and garden pots we have coated with LuminOre appear to repel snails, slugs, and other forms of pests, without poisoning the pests or our environment.

Another area of exploration for LuminOre’s environmentally beneficial characteristics is that of radioactive pollution. Although we do not offer LuminOre Lead in our regular product line, we have developed an innovative, environmentally friendly lead. Like our other composite metals, LuminOre Lead does not breakdown or corrode and does not conduct electricity. This means traditional lead uses for effective gamma radiation shielding can be replaced without the traditional hazards of lead leaching and poisoning.

LuminOre Composite Metals have a low VOC content, an insignificant leach rate. The materials are non-electrically conductive, anti-corrosive, and do not break down or contaminate. LuminOre materials do not produce liquid waste requiring hazardous material disposal. These features boast an incredibly innovative, environmentally sound technology that offers astronomical potential for making our planet a safer place to live.

The Association of Woodworking & Furnishing Suppliers first created the Fair in 1957 as a way to help its members increase sales. Today, the Woodworking Fair is one of the largest events in the industry, featuring over 360,000 square feet of exhibits and over 800 exhibitors from around the world along with numerous educational seminars and workshops. Of those 800 global exhibitors LuminOre was recognized for it’s efforts in positively impacting waste reduction in air, land and water pollution.

Thomas J. Valente, President and Inventor, is expecting to “gain positive notoriety and increased exposure for our environmentally innovative composite metals.” For further information on LuminOre, Inc. and the patented cold composite metals, call (760) 597-9201, or log on to www.luminore.com.
