Outdoor Advertising Continues Strong Growth- Revenue Increases 5% in First Quarter

Washington, D.C., -- The outdoor advertising industry posted $1.3 billion in revenue at the close of the first quarter of 2004. This indicates a 5% increase over first quarter 2003, and sustains the healthy growth trend that has been consistent throughout the past 12 months. (Please see attached 1st quarter chart.)

“The outdoor industry has enjoyed steady growth of approximately 5% for several quarters,” said Stephen Freitas, chief marketing officer for the Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA). “Because outdoor media remained resilient during the ad industry recession of 2002, these gains are particularly significant as they indicate real industry growth rather than the market recovery other sectors are now experiencing.”

There was significant growth in the Insurance & Real Estate category, which grew 32.5% compared to 2003, reflecting the low interest rates that have continued to make the home buying market strong. There were also strong advances in the Local Services & Amusements category which was up 10.8% and the Automotive, Auto Accessories & Equipment category which grew 9.3%. Modest grow was posted in the Financial (6.8%), Telecommunications (6.1%), Restaurants (4.1%) and Automotive Dealers & Services (2.0%) categories.

The biggest decrease was in the Media & Advertising category which was down 11.1%. Other categories that experienced decreases were Public Transportation, Hotels & Resorts (4.1%) and Retail (0.9%).

The OAAA is the largest trade association representing the outdoor advertising industry. It is dedicated to leading and uniting a responsible outdoor advertising industry that is committed to serving the needs of consumers, advertisers and the public. The OAAA’s nearly 1,100 member companies generate more than $5.5 billion annually in ad revenues, representing more than 90% of industry income.

OAAA issues full industry revenue estimates that include, but are not limited to, CMR’s data on billboards, member company affidavits, and media projections based on a mix of recognized national syndicated data sources.
