Universal Laser System Used In Making World’s Biggest Guitar

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Discovery Channel aired their third episode of “BIG!” a story line about making oversized items, like a blender, popcorn popper, and guitar, that are fully functional. For the BIG! guitar segment, world-renowned Seymour Duncan of Santa Barbara, Calif. was consulted to produce a pickup for the largest guitar in the world. Seymour Duncan has created custom pickups for musicians such as Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and Edward Van Halen.

Seymour Duncan uses a Universal laser system in his shop to make parts for his pickups. The bobbin of this particular pickup for the 2,500 pound, 31-foot vintage style guitar was made with Masonite® and cut with a 50-watt Universal V-460. At its final size, the pickup set a Guiness World Record.

After the guitar was completed, a performance featuring Peter Frampton was held at Universal Amphitheatre in Universal City, Calif. The BIG! guitar set a world record for the “biggest guitar ever played in an ensemble arrangement.”

“It’s great that one of our machines was part of this exciting, world record-breaking experience,” notes Chuck Kreuzer, Sales Engineer (and guitar player) at Universal Laser Systems, Inc. “People in the music industry are now realizing that laser systems can be used for so many applications: from cutting thin pearl, shell laminates, and wood products to cutting custom plastic pick guards and decorative engraving on guitar bodies and head stocks.” Kreuzer continues, “Laser systems can even mark and etch on metals and glass; it’s such a versatile piece of equipment.”

CO2 laser engraving systems are utilized in woodworking, awards and custom gifts, sign making, and embroidery industries, as well as architecture and numerous industrial fields. Laser systems run like printers from Windows-based programs, like CorelDRAW® and AutoCAD®.
