Society for Environmental Graphic Design Names Six New Board Members

Washington, DC ­ SEGD (the Society For Environmental Graphic Design) is pleased to announce the election of six new Board members who will serve on the SEGD Board of Directors for the next two years.

Paul P. Gable
Paul is the Founder and President of GableSigns, Inc., a Maryland-based company that specializes in the development, production, and installation of custom architectural sign projects throughout the United States and beyond. The company, which began as a home-based enterprise in 1980 upon Paul’s graduation from high school, works with clientele in the retail, corporate, and real estate development industries. Most recently, the firm has developed a niche in the rebranding of financial, healthcare, and sports facilities. Their work has been featured in multiple publications and has been the recipient of numerous awards for excellence by the United States Sign Council. Additionally, Paul has made it part of his company’s mission to provide signage to various non-profit organizations throughout the community.

Kelly Kolar
Principal of Kolar Design, Kelly has more than fifteen years of experience. As principal designer, she has been on many project teams, serving as Project Manager, Design Director, Project Professional, and member of an alliance design firm. She has directed her firm in a wide range of design projects including Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Main Street for the University of Cincinnati, and the global headquarters for Procter & Gamble. Her understanding of the architectural and environmental design industry is key to her success as she has gained in-depth knowledge of architectural graphics and wayfinding through consultation with a variety of firms, public institutions, and cities. Kelly is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning. She has been an adjunct professor at the University of Cincinnati and The College of Mt. St. Joseph. Her firm’s work is featured in books including Urban Identities, Designing and Planning Environmental Graphics, and City Signs.

Christian Lachel
Christian is Creative Director of Creative Development at BRC Imagination Arts in Burbank, CA. As such, he is able to partner with America’s most prestigious museums to tell timeless stories in new, exciting, and environmentally responsible ways. Christian has led design teams for the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, the Henry Ford, and NASA. He is a LEED-accredited professional, and the driving force behind a Green Task Force that has as its mission the transformation of the museum design industry into a national and world leader in “green” design and operation. He headed up the creative group that produced the first LEED Gold certified building, which was for the Ford Rouge Factory Tour. Christian graduated with honors from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, earning a BFA in Illustration and Experience Design. He also studied Advertising and Design at the College of Dupage. Christian is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council, American Association of Museums, AZA, ASTC, and AIGA.

Janet A. Martin
Janet is President of Communication Arts Inc., the Boulder-based design firm founded by Henry Beer and Richard Foy in 1973. After receiving a B.A. in art history from The Colorado College in Colorado Springs, she attended graduate school at The University of Colorado, and later earned her M.B.A. from the University of Denver. Janet served as Chair of the Boulder Chamber of Commerce Board in 2003, and is past President of the Association of Professional Design Firms. She also serves on the Design Futures Council Board of Advisors; in 2001, that organization named her a Senior Fellow. Janet is also the 1999 SEGD Fellow.

Steven L. Stamper
Principal Steven L. Stamper was one of the founders of fd2s (originally Fuller Dyal & Stamper) in 1985. He currently leads the 50-member team as it addresses critical strategic and technical issues related to wayfinding, orientation, and placemaking in the environment. Steve is a seasoned environment designer with experience across a range of retail, corporate, and institutional project types. With a formal design education complemented by hands-on experience in the sign industry, he brings a unique perspective and a high level of technical understanding to the discipline of environment design. Steve's recent work includes the development of comprehensive wayfinding and orientation strategies for Austin's Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the Duke University Medical Center's Duke Clinic, and the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Gary Stemler
Gary has been in the environmental graphics industry for over 16 years. He is the Vice President of manufacturing at Nordquist, which is celebrating their 100th year in business, and has been with the firm for over 13 years, starting as their Director of Design Engineering. Gary has worked on a variety of nationally recognized projects involving estimating, engineering, and project management. His current responsibilities include overseeing the manufacturing process of signage programs and implementing new manufacturing methods and technologies into production. By combining his design experience and manufacturing background, he works with clients by recommending methods of fabrication, material options, and installation techniques to implement their final vision. Gary graduated from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design.
