SGIA '05 Cancelled: Frequently Asked Questions

1) Why did SGIA cancel SGIA'05?

  • New Orleans informed us officially on August 31 that the city can't host SGIA '05.
  • The logistical challenges of changing cities - for us and for the exhibitors - were huge.
  • SGIA '05 was breaking records. To accomplish the high expectations our members are accustomed to in a new city in less than a month was not possible.
2) How will this affect the association?
SGIA has fully recovered from the show cancellation of 2001, and event cancellation insurance will partially mitigate the financial impact on the association. Additionally, many exhibitors are applying their booth fees towards SGIA'06 instead of seeking refunds. The association expects to move forward with no disruption to the benefits and services provided to our members and the industry.
3) How is SGIA going to help attendees who already pre-registered?
  • The Association will e-mail all pre-registered attendees this week.
  • Registration fees will be refunded. If attendees prefer, we will donate their fees to the American Red Cross.
  • Airfare - Contact the airline. Many airlines have policies where tickets are good for a year from the original travel date, although they may charge a fee for changing the reservation.
  • Hotel fees - Deposits will be refunded, if you made reservations through Travel Planners (SGIA's Housing Bureau, the folks reached through the SGIA '05 Web site). If attendees used another service or contacted the property directly, they should handle the refund process directly with the vendor they used.
4) How is SGIA going to help Exhibitors?
  • The Association sent an e-mail to all exhibitors on August 31.
  • Booth fees will be refunded if requested. Alternatively, exhibitors are urged to apply what they've paid to date to SGIA '06 (Booth Sales for SGIA 06 will occur as schedule on Wednesday, September 7th).
If you used another service or contacted the property directly, please handle the refund process directly with the vendor used.
  • Exhibitors should please update their SGIA Virtual Trade Show Booth (http://www.sgia.org/vts/company_list.cfm) as we are going to be heavily promoting the "virtual" trade show, and it will link to the floor plan for SGIA'06
5) What about the Golden Image Competition and Schellenberg awards?
  • If you have already sent your entries to the Golden Image depository in New Orleans, contact your shipper immediately to check the status of your package.
  • You will receive a full refund of your Golden Image entry fees (including extra shipping fees that you paid) by November 3, 2005
6) What happens now?
  • Moving forward, we're focusing on SGIA '06, Las Vegas (Sep. 26 - 29, 2005)
  • Space sales for SGIA '06 will take place next week - Wednesday, September 7 - as planned.
  • Coming up in October we have two other educational opportunities, and we will be exploring additional opportunities to provide support to all our members.
    • SGIA Imaging Symposium - Vancouver
    • Garment Decorators Workshop - Portland, Oregon
  • Additional Symposiums, Additional Regional Workshops, Membrane Switch Symposium, National Environmental Health & Safety Conference and more are being planned for 2006.
7) What are the next several SGIA show dates?
  • 2006-Las Vegas; 2007-Orlando; 2008-Atlanta.
  • We're scheduled to be in New Orleans again in November 2009.
8) Is the association making any donations to New Orleans disaster relief?
  • If they wish, attendees can apply their registration fees to a donation we'll make to the American Red Cross. We'll include instructions in the e-mail we're sending out this week.
  • We're investigating ways help facilitate industry support for member printers in the hurricane
