2006 SEGD Design Awards Program Jury Announced

Washington, DC - SEGD (the Society for Environmental Graphic Design) is pleased to announce the jury for its 2006 SEGD Design Awards Program.

SEGD’s annual design competition honors the best in environmental graphic design. Projects include themed environments, wayfinding & signage, placemaking projects, mapping, public art, identity programs, architectural graphics, exhibits, and retail; also included are student work and un-built projects. Images from winning entries from previous years may be viewed on the Design Awards page of www.segd.org.

Winners in the program will be announced at the awards presentation in Hollywood, CA, in early June at the 2006 SEGD Annual Conference & Expo. Winning projects will be exhibited at the conference and become part of a traveling exhibit. Program entries must be submitted no later than January 31, 2006; late entries will be accepted through February 14, 2006.

Chair
Steven L. Stamper was one of the founders of fd2s (originally Fuller Dyal & Stamper) and currently leads the 50-member team as it addresses critical strategic and technical issues related to wayfinding, orientation, and placemaking in the environment. He is a seasoned environment designer with experience across a range of retail, corporate, and institutional project types. With a formal design education complemented by hands-on experience in the sign industry, he brings a unique perspective and a high level of technical understanding to the discipline of environment design. Recent work includes the development of comprehensive wayfinding and orientation strategies for Austin's Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the Duke University Medical Center's Duke Clinic, and the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Jurors
Chris Calori is a Principal of Calori & Vanden-Eynden, an internationally-recognized, award-winning design firm based in New York City and specializing in the planning and design of signage and wayfinding programs. With a client base that includes America’s and Asia’s foremost architects, institutions, and developers, the firm has built its reputation as one of the nation’s leading environmental graphic design firms. Her work has received awards from SEGD, AIA, IDSA, AIGA, and the City of New York, and has been featured in numerous national and international periodicals and books. She is currently authoring a book on the planning and design process for signage and wayfinding programs, tentatively titled “Signage and Wayfinding: A Process Guide”. Chris holds a Bachelor of Science in industrial design and a Master of Arts in design planning from Ohio State University.

Bill Hill founded MetaDesign in San Francisco with a mission to create value for clients through the integration of art and engineering. As a leader, problem-solver, integrator, and connector, he has built the firm into an influential company that has solved a wide range of information design problems through award-winning identities, interfaces, and environmental graphics. Previously, Bill was Director of Design for IDEO Product Development, where he designed and directed projects for various companies including Hewlett-Packard, Metaphor Systems, and Apple. He speaks extensively and is a member of AIGA, the Corporate Design Foundation, and the Design Management Institute. Bill graduated from Stanford University with a degree in graphic design and journalism.

Susan Lipka provides senior leadership and corporate level management of all the functions of facilities planning and space management at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. For the past thirty years, she has worked with academic medical centers on the development of major clinical and research facilities. Currently she holds the position of Executive Director of Capital Planning & Management Services and is responsible for 1.4 billion dollars of new construction and renovation projects at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Indiana University.

Isaac Marshal, an Associate at AldrichPears Associates, combines extensive experience in designing and developing interpretive experiences with a comprehensive and current understanding of sustainable design principles. His knowledge of visual communications principles and processes enable him to communicate complex ideas with a distinct visual literacy. He has a strong interest in green design and enjoys the challenge of designing exhibits on sustainability that practice what they interpret. Recent projects include heritage, historical and interpretive centers for Stanley Park Nature Interpretive Centre, Vancouver, BC and the Northwest Maritime Center, Port Townsend, WA. His museum work includes the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History, Santa Cruz, CA and the Prince William Sound Community College Museum, Valdez, AK.

Jan Tribbey, Vice President of Planning and Design for Aveda, supervises the design of retail stores, lifestyle salons, and institutes throughout Aveda’s worldwide network. She is responsible for interior planning and design, exterior brand identity, fixturing, and architecture. An award-winning designer, Jan’s work has been featured in a Whitney Museum exhibition and in many other art and design shows and publications. At FRCH Design Worldwide, she directed retail projects for a range of clients including Kmart and Old Navy. She has also managed new and renovation projects for Macy’s, Disney Epcot Center, and Blockbuster. Jan earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from the University of Cincinnati.

Kathy Wesselman is a Principal of wpa, inc., an interdisciplinary design firm specializing in graphic design and architecture located in Seattle. In 1994, she merged her graphic design firm, Wesselman Design, with Anthony Pellecchia Architecture Studio to form the firm. The merging of the two disciplines provides the opportunity to develop the environmental graphic design product on a detailed architectural and site-specific level and the freedom to test ideas about design and surroundings. Her work has been published in design magazines such as Communication Arts, Architecture, and Identity and her environmental graphic design work is featured in five books. She has received awards from SEGD, the Communication Arts Design Competition, the American Association of Museums, and Typographers International.

SEGD is an international non-profit educational foundation providing resources for design specialists in the field of environmental graphic design. The organization has been instrumental in defining and raising the profile of the field as well as recognizing its professionals. SEGD members are leading designers of directional and attraction systems, destination graphics, identity programs, exhibits, and themed environments.

Environmental Graphic Design embraces many design disciplines including graphic, architectural, interior, landscape, and industrial design, all concerned with the visual aspects of wayfinding, communicating identity and information, and shaping the idea of place.
