Evolutionary Burst, Printing Explosion - SGIA Brings the Digital Cutting Edge to the Frontlines of Specialty Imaging
Fairfax, Virginia - The show floor at the SGIA Digital Expo (Phoenix, December 8-10, 2005) literally hummed with the sounds of equipment, sales, and networking. The vast majority of attendees (72.9 percent) said digital imaging was their primary process or at the very least a strong complement to their other technologies. That's in line with the wide-format imaging industry as a whole, according to SGIA President/CEO Michael Robertson.
"In this month's Wide-Format Imaging Survey, 67.6 percent of respondents told us they've got wide-format imaging equipment in-house. More than half - 52.7 percent - said that based on revenues, digital imaging is their primary printing process," he said.
Buying was the name of the game in Phoenix, where serious buyers met with leading suppliers: 46.3 percent of attendees have plans to make an imaging or finishing equipment purcase in the next year. That's in addition to those who bought equipment on site.
"This is the best show we ever had," said Rak Kumar, Raster Printers Inc. "There's absolutely no question but that we met our goals."
The sales and attitude on the show floor were indicative of the optimism wide-format digital imagers are showing, Robertson noted.
"We had 90.6 percent of respondents to the Wide-Format Imaging Survey tell us their digitally-based revenue will increase over the next year. They're very upbeat about the revenues in 2006," said Robertson.
Equipment that's top of mind for the digital imager is largely of the flatbed variety, with rigid media receiving responses from 35 percent of companies asked for their top three media and 56.8 percent of attendees in Phoenix to look at flatbed inkjet printers.
Also near the top of the list: solvent ink systems. Some 74.4 percent of survey respondents said their leading media include vinyl, a substrate for which solvent inks are designed.
"We came to see what's out there, what's new and how fast technology is moving. We're here to keep up with the competition," said attendee Scott Smith of Sierra Screen Printing.
Even before the show ended, attendees and exhibitors were asking Robertson: What's next?
"SGIA '06 will bring together these exhibitors and attendees, plus other technologies and markets," he said. "It's a broader way to see where imaging technology and the marketplace are taking our industry.
"Because of digital imaging technology, specialty imaging as an industry is in a sort of evolutionary boom. Clients are feeding off the boom and clamoring to bring their ideas to life. SGIA is here to bring our members the tools to do just that."
SGIA '06 will take place September 26-29, 2006 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Sponsoring the show are Hewlett Packard Co., 3M Commercial Graphics Division, US Screen & Inkjet Technology and VUTEk (Platinum Sponsors) and Bayer Films Americas, GBC, InteliCoat Technologies, Roland DGA Corp. (Gold Sponsors).
