Ukena Has Printers Choosing the Right Plastisol Ink at SGIA ’06

Garment printers will save time and money by learning the correct ink uses

Fairfax, Virginia — Mike Ukena’s passion for using the right inks made him the perfect pick to lead “Plastisol Ink Management” (September 27 10:30 am to 11:20 am) at SGIA ’06 (Las Vegas, September 2629).

“The biggest mistake screen printers make is using the wrong ink for a given application. It’s a widespread problem for small and big screen printers,” Ukena said.

Ukena will share inside tips and a reference table to teach garment printers how to choose the correct plastisol inks for most fabric types and colors. He’ll also discuss the value of ink matching systems and ways to minimize ink mistakes and inventory waste.

“I’m going to concentrate on what printers can do correctly in terms of ink applications,” with a focus on inks plastisol-based systems, said Ukena, a Regional Sales Manager for Union Ink Co. Inc. (Ridgefield, New Jersey). “I’ll try to expand to water-based inks if I get the time,” he added.

Ukena, a former SGIA staffer and current Academy of Screen Printing Technology member, said ink is not just a turnkey product; it’s a vital component to the process.

“Printers need to learn how to effectively work with their inks. They’ve got look at a particular substrate and use the correct ink application to get the most out of it,” he said.

Handouts Ukena has planned include copies of the slides accompanying the presentation and reference materials further explaining best uses for plastisol inks.
