Calgary Workshop Takes Garment Decorators up a Notch
Attendees learn how to produce premium apparel at two-day event
Fairfax, Virginia — Garment decorators from across the globe fine-tuned their apparel printing techniques at SGIA’s recent regional workshop, “Advanced Garment Printing: A Roadmap to Success” (Wheat Buckley and His Talking Horse Screenworks Inc.; Calgary, Alberta, Canada; October 2728, 2006).
The results were apparent as soon as they got home, attendees said. “I already can see a difference, especially in the quality of my screens,” said Sam Mashtoub, Positive Results Fashion Inc. (Montreal, Quebec).
“This will definitely help improve the work we’re doing [in terms of] speed and efficiency,” said Deb Sutherland, van Hellemond Sporte Ltd. (Genelle, British Columbia).
Johnny Shell, SGIA’s Vice President for Technical Services, described the students — from Canada, India, Japan and the United States — as ready to take their shops to the next level.
“A lot of the participants in this workshop are small shops that are somewhat tired of producing what I call the ‘one-to-two-color scenario.’ We want to help them break away from simple, screen printing jobs, and take on more complex orders that are more profitable for their business,” Shell said.
To propel garment decorators toward that goal, lead instructor Charlie Taublieb, Taublieb Consulting (Englewood, Colorado); freelance artist Tristan Jost; and Suzanne Dagenais, of host Wheat Buckley, spent the first day giving a fast-paced instruction on separation routines, which included four-color, indexed and simulated. Attendees also learned insider tricks to using special effects inks.
Then, Taublieb put attendees in the driver’s seat, with hands-on instruction in Wheat Buckley’s leading-edge production facility.
“The knowledge I got from this workshop opened up a whole new world of possibilities I can do to wow my customers,” said attendee Wade Anderson, Momentum Apparel (Blackfalds, Alberta).
The next regional workshop will be held April 2021, 2007, at The Motion Co. in West Sacramento, California. Check back at SGIA.org as more details about the event unfold.
